Description Battle of the Atlantic Part 7

Convoy 29 en route to London England carrying war supplies

The convoy was a small convoy with only nine merchants and a dozen destroyers with two cruisers. However, it was a convoy that the Russians did not want to get to its destination because the ships were three Super Tankers, five post-panama cannel container ships, and one Landing Ship Tank (LST) carrying tanks and IFVs. In addition, all the ships were equipped with SAMs.

USS Ticonderoga

The Tico as her crew called her had been rushed back into service and placed on convoy duty even though her captain did not want to be put on convoy duty but it was more enjoyable. “Hey Captain. What is that?” a lookout asked. “That’s a missile! Battle stations! Ahead Flank! ECM officer jam that thing!” shouted the captain. GONG! GONG! GONG! Went the klaxon alarm. “Aye sir!” shouted the ECM officer, ECM stood for Electronic Counter Measures. “Engines answering ahead flank!” said the helm officer. Meanwhile on the bow the Mk 26 twin arm launcher turned toward the missiles and fired.  A pair of SM-3 missiles streaked toward that incoming. “Hit!” cried the fore missile officer. “Launch Chaff Rockets!” cried the captain. Everyone in the CIC winced as rockets blasted out of their launchers and detonated. “Missile passing aft going for the chaff!” cried a radar operator. “Missile lock spoofed!” said the ECM officer. Then it was over the whole attack had lasted five minutes. “Status report!” yelled the captain. “We got one; the Kidd got most of the rest. However, her missiles killed one cruiser and a merchant and wreaked a destroyer.” Said the first officer. “Must have been a Charlie class SSGN.” Said the captain. “Agreed.” Said the lookout. After four hours of searching had found nothing they resumed course toward London.

USS Enterprise off the coast off Bermuda

“Operation Fire hawk is a go! I repeat Operation Fire hawk is a go!” said the CIC director. Operation Fire hawk was a plan to stop the Russian Laser Ship Project at its source the homeport of the Black Sea Fleet. It involved a massive strike package of nearly 78 F-35-B and Cs with a squadron of F-14-S Stealth Super Tomcats on standby just in case the F-35s needed someone to bail them out just in case the situation got too sticky for the Lightings to handle alone. The F-35s left flight decks like clockwork until the entire package was in the air.

2 hours later Operation Fire hawk strike package ETA to target 40 minutes

“Okay everyone activate your onboard jammers.” Said Rhett ‘War Raven’ Cardona. “Wish we had a few prowlers go in first.” The next 40 minutes was uneventful. “Well what do we have here?” said a rookie on his first combat mission. That was when lead waggled his wings. “Here we go! Attack!” the Lightings winged over and the attack began. “Here comes the AA!” shouted Aspen three. Sure enough, pink, black, red, white, and yellow puffs began to come to meet them. “Bombs away!” shouted Gus ‘Sugar’ Wolverine. As two cluster bombs dropped and smothered a trio of AA emplacements. “Aw crap! SAM launch! Four O’ clock low!” shouted Aspen lead. “Whoa! SA-8-J SAM launcher!” shouted Phoenix ‘Matador’ Charlie. “Missile away!” he shouted. And fired an AGM-64-H Maverick missile and decimated the SAM launcher. “I am hit!” screamed Aspen six. “I can’t hold her she’s breaking …..” as Phantom three’s fighter broke up in mid-air. Back on Enterprise, the crew on the bridge could only listen then the captain said, “Launch a few EA-6 Prowlers with jato rocket engines!” Back over the target area pilots watched as eight SAM launchers light up like a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. Prowlers raced out of the sun. That allowed the Lightings to deal with flak guns. “Tally one Russian Laser ship in dry dock. Harpoons away!” yelled War Raven. Those missiles found something important because the whole ship detonated and became a ball of fire. “Target eliminated!” cried War Raven.

Five hours later USS Enterprise

“14 of ours has returned, USS Langley reports that 20 of her own have returned, the Minstal reports 9 of her own have returned, Shanghai says that only four of her own as well as two of ours have returned, almost everyone else reports no returns” reported the radioman. “Dam!” muttered the captain. “You said it sir.” Commented the radioman. “At least the mission was a success.” Said the first officer. “Sir ELF traffic coming in new orders!” said the radioman with awe. “We are to report back Norfolk and get a refit and be put in a large task force with the Shanghai and her sister ship the Beijing.” He said. “Understood, helm plot a course back Norfolk best possible speed.” Ordered the captain.
