Ah, Just try Graphicsgale for now then. The free version doesn't let you save .gif-files (animations), but thaht doesn't mean you can't already give pixeling a try. :3

Yeah...turns out GIMP is kind of a mean file...it tried to change my search settings to bing, and it wouldn't open...

Normally, in the box where you can see your layer, you should have an arrow pointing down with a line underneath it. Click that and you should be able to add a layer. :3
