Description A couple came into my gallery.  They were full of youth and vitality, as only young people might have.  Examining many of my images they selected one of my film exposures to purchase for their home, then chatted with me for a while.  She had marelous freckles.

When I explained to her, how photogenic she looked, she was unaware of these charms.  Some women are not aware of the seductive powers of freckles.  I describe this as the girl next door look, friendly, approachable, a natural womanly beauty.  I explained her freckles would look best in a black and white, then positioned her in my store until she relaxed.  I took just a few images to illustrate what I had meant, the power of her freckles, sending this image to her later.

Taken with a 90mm F2.0 Summicron, hand held at way too slow of a shutter speed, 1/12th a second.

I love taking a portrait with the smile just emerging.  It makes me feel accepted by the subject, as an approval just for me.

with story:

I've been in this shop a few times before and really enjoyed it. It smells like my grandparents basement did and is chock full of interesting old cameras, stereo equipment, other electronics and miscellanea. In the past I've just browsed around for a bit and never bought anything. I never spoke to the owner, and he never spoke to me. This time was different. There were several other people in the shop and he was making rounds talking to everyone. I told him I was just browsing to which he replied, "Well sometimes the conversations you overhear are more interesting than the merchandise" or something to that effect. He then approached 3 teens, a boy and two girls. They talked for a bit as I browsed, then as I headed towards the door I overheard him say to the girl, who couldn't have been older than 18, "You should really let someone photograph you. You're young and have nice curves, everything is still contained..." Well THAT was certainly an interesting conversation. Not knowing how to react, and knowing she was with friends I just hurried up and left. Later I saw the three teens together so at least she didn't get abducted...yet. I don't think I'll go back.

The guy behind the counter....he tried to be nice but he tried way too hard. It came off kinda creepy. I was there with a friend and he made a point, four times, to say how attractive she was. First time nice, second time ok, third...ya reaching buddy. Fourth, what's wrong with ya man?

Also he wanted about 50 bucks more than other places (real or internet) for vintage photo lenses.

I really like the story and personally I like the framing, which I call a "close-up" or "intimate" portrait. The resulting image might work for her, but you would get bad grades in craftsmanship if I’d choose to write a critique. Also I don’t agree on freckles looking best in black and white, but that might come down to personal experience and taste Just trying to be honest here, no offense meant.

I chose the cropping for two reasons.  the gallery has many distractions, best elilminated with a tight cropping.  her freckles were evident but not prominent, more effectively seen with less distractions, the same reason I chose the black and white.  sepia would have been another option.
