This is my entry for the Nov '05 Avatarfan contest at Link .

Please bear my calligraphy, but that's just a good idea of how his name is written in traditional (eh, same way in simplified) chinese.

Why must we come up with a background story?! *dies* Yea..my writing skills and creativity is sorta...meep.... Anyhow, I tried to make it short and brief. Rather not have Avatar-club suffer any longer.

Name : Shen (Surname) Qin

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Nation: Earth Kingdom

Likes: egg tarts, pecans, his sword, old earth kingdom myths, hiking, traveling, showing off (before), joking around, girls, competition, and teasing his younger siblings.

Dislikes: Spiders, heights, broccoli, his strict, “abusive,” earth-bending instructor, and the Fire Nation.

Background Info: Like his name, Qin is very diligent and hardworking. When he first started to learn Earth-bending from master Li eight years ago, he would practice longer and harder than the rest of the students from sun up to sun down, never taking a rest, but problem was that he had too much pride and lacked both discipline and control. At the age of thirteen, he would show off to the other students by moving large masses of rocks and boulders without limit. It was all fun and games until he lost control of a large boulder on top of a small mountain during morning practice one day and caused a landslide that endangered the other students. Master Li, fortunately, was there to prevent the children from being seriously injured or killed during that incident. Qin was lectured and punished severely. He was sent to solitary confinement in a deserted cave for four days without food or water, and came out barely alive, but Master Li was harsh when it came to discipline for his students. Some of the master’s punishments include: holding a large boulder on your back for two days, hanging on a branch fifty feet high for three hours, etc. Although Qin resented Master Li’s methods of punishment, he soon grew respect for Master Li, especially after the incident of endangering his friends and classmates. Since then, Qin relearned all the earth-bending principles and uses his earth-bending only when it is necessary, but that didn’t keep him from still teasing his younger siblings.

Area/Region: Qin and his family (for a picture of him and his siblings, go here ) lives in the East Northern region of Earth Kingdom, in a city known as "Chang Dao" or "常道". The Fire Nation has made many attempts to capture the city, but have failed thus far. Chang Dao, at the moment, will strive and keep resisting their Fire-bending invaders like the great city of Omanshu from the South.
