Nice start! You know, it reminds me of Mega Man ZX:
In the game, the character (Vent or Aile) can use a technologically advanced sword called a Z-Saber when then use Model ZX to transform. If you charge the sword attack to maximum, when they swing the Z-Saber spikes of energy fly out, almost exactly like your animation here!
