I drew this for contest. The characters are from , a story made by her and her partnerDone approximately within 36 hours... almost no sleep *I'm an insomaniac!
I started coloring the girl, hoping that the result and effect would come out like 's work. But yappari neeee~~~ toooii tooooi *it's still too far till I really catch up *I wanna lock myself in my room.... NAH! Probably just trying again
Amelia is a fire mage in training and she fell in love with Arden, an ex war soldier. I browsed their stories hoping that I could catch the emotion and characters correctly. The story is about two last sister mages. I hope they will continue the story soon. You know, I love every fantasy story with "LAST" in the idea.
Aang The Last Air Bender, Last Hero in China, and more XD... Creations with "LAST" in the idea likely to be always success XD (I also have an idea about the last spell caster, very well I'll post it here soon >_<)
ABOU THE ARTWORK: KOI NO AKATOMBO (means Love of Red Dragonflies)
I love dragonfly. Especially the red dragonfly. It's said that you will see them in the last days of summer. I love them coz they're like the messenger of my most favorite season: AUTUMN. And do you know that dragonfly couples are so loyal to each other. The male dragonfly will protect the female, especially when she's pregnant, to the extent that he would fly above her, so if there's a predator, only he would be eaten, not his wife.
A good paralel for Amelia and Arden story, right? *wink wink...
Sweeet! When I knew that info, I thought like: YEAH! I chose the right insect! XD *thanks God I didn't choose black widow XD LOL
Again, to draw these dragonflies, I was helped by detailed tutorial by Ian Wongkar here web.facebook.com/ayenwongkar/m…
In the character sheet, it is said that Arden has lazy/laidback personality, that's why he has "Buddha sleep" pose in the artwork LOL... You'd see that not only them are the lovey dovey in the artwork XD XD XD
The outfit is actually one alternative outfit of them. I see unknownsushi drew them here: so I chose to use this outfit since the theme is "Summer". Only added some random tribal tatto for Arden's white shirt.
Anyway, seems like I'm a romance breaker XD I couldn't stand drawing a total romantic pose (it makes me itchy, and nosebleeding for unknown reason XD). So I added a twist above.
That blue mage in rage is Samantha, Amelia's elder sister. A prodigy water mage who has wolf as her soul spirit. I read that Samantha felt a bit hostile towards Arden. Probably because she's so overprotective towards her sister (who would trust a lazy soldier to guard your sister anyway???).
She's is so angry coz Amelia skips her training again to date with Arden XD And when she's checking, it's look like she gets the wrong impression, due to those lovers' poses XD
Behind her is Lucas, Samantha BF. He's trying to catch up to Samantha before she kills someone for real XD (Lucas: Samanthaaaa! They don't do anything strange!!!)
I wonder if Samantha could really call storm in the original story XD XD XD

About the outline, when I decided to use pencil color as my specialization, I thought I will just make the outlines fading with the main color. Like in here:
Just to make it look more natural as we don't have any lines for the objects in the real world, right? That's why I somehow avoid using drawing pen anymore, unless if it's really necessary.
However, the artist I just adore apparently gives brown outlines for her artworks, and it's very lovely that I decide to finally give this artwork brown outline either. Now after reading your critique I think it would be worse if I didn't give any outline then XD
Well...maybe I really should make it thicker for the next. I dunno... I'm still making experiments...
About the white highlight. Indeed! When I'm going full color, then white becomes hard to control, as the shading of other colors would blur the whites at all. I wish I could do more for the eyes. I'm still not able to create sparkling eyes like in other artists' artwork. I guess this should be my priority also.
Artist I adore used white titanium acrylic/poster paint to make the white highlight better. I've bought it actually. Just haven't experiment with it. Since it's a watercolor pencil, I'm still afraid if the acrylic/poster paint would break the color like what will be done by water.
I guess I really need to experiment in my next pieces.
Yeah I do really have anatomical problems in this piece. Apparently you're the first pointing it out here XD.... The error happened just when I'm trying this new pose... oh God *OTL Why it always be realized just when I finished the piece and submitted it? T^T
Guess I have to pray that the colors will do their best to camouflage the flaws *OTL
Somehow I was worried that this art will be too sweet like over sugar candy that people will feel sick after looking it for particular times. I'm so happy that apparently until now people express their fond towards this piece. I'm so relieved TuT
Maybe this pose is too common, but I never tried it before XD I added the background and the dragonflies, hoping to make it a bit more different. I still have poses that I wanna try. And will definitely do it for my next pieces...
I'm happy you mention about the sky. Actually I wanna make a realist sky effect. But it turned out like the sky and clouds appeared in children's story book *OTL
Guess more practices then. Also it looks like in nighttime right? It should be in a day, as I wanted to make a high contrast between the clear sky and the storm summoned by the mage behind....

Believe me ;-; It's the same when I upload work D: (Or when I notice a small mistake during drawing phase yet am too lazy to try and fix it xD)
I do admire your style with the outlines ^_^ unfortunately at the moment my experience only shows me that to make things stand out you'll have to outline things black (But that's probably a preference things) Although the colours you choose do give a great feel to them
I tried myself once to avoid using black and I did like the outcome ^_^ although there are so many mistakes in my own work it's too much to count ;-;

Although The anime No Game No Life inspired the outline colours of that piece because they use a red outline in the actual anime xD
Either way, the way you have outline it does also give it a more realistic calming to the eyes effect which not at all bad ^_^
Experimenting is really good!
It's great that you have an artist to look up to ^_^ it proves that you have something you can aim to become as good as or even better than them! and when they notice you it's like you're dying a little inside from the excitement of pleasing that artist you always looked up to ^_^
and of course any outline is better than no outline when it comes to basic rules of drawing anime/manga
White is probably the most troublesome thing to shade O-O Especially when it comes to working traditionally with pencils and pens! D: At the moment I've found that white gel pens are pretty good to highlight things with (Although they work better over pencils than they do over pens) ^_^ When I first fond out that I could use white gel pens I went crazy with highlighting!
But also your suggestion with the paint is also really good! It would make your highlighting a ton more effective! But experiment and practice with it and I'm sure you'll make your art look really awesome when you get the hang of it! ^_^
I also have anatomical problems ;-; I am trying my hardest in every piece of work I draw to improve something, whether it's the shape of the ear to the size and shape of hands D; it's my worst quality about me with my work because there is always something off in my drawings! D:
This is why I rely on my colouring efforts to hide the flaws
If your artwork was sickly sweet I would have definitely mentioned it D: But your artwork has a sense of maturity to it and that's what drew me into admiring and critiquing your deviation in the first place ^_^
The dragonflies in this really do stand out and that is definitely something I haven't seen before! The whole thing is put together well so that the dragonflies look like they belong there in the drawing too ^_^
The sky, I thought, was very well done. I didn't think it looked like night at all because of the colour choice you chose around the whole sketch but only now you've mentioned it I see what you mean. Although it's not that apparent at first glance I do believe you've done a great job with the sky ^_^ ( I've never attempted to draw skies as real as I could because I know that I'd fail

Yap, color is the soul of art
When I drew the dragonflies I imagine it's like a rolling camera, then suddenly some dragonflies pass by right in front of the scene ^_^ I'll draw them more and make them as one of my trait fufufufu XD
Aaa...mature ne? XD Actually I want to make my arts always safe for every age XD When I show this picture to my Ma she asked, "What did you draw huh? Why did you draw this?"

I'm amazed.
I first had a look at this when it was posted, and have come back to take a look at it through a corse of few days.
It's so beautiful, that I find it hard to write a critique, that I decided to let my thoughts brew for a while.
Everything seems to be perfect, and I find no meaningful things to mention worth editing:
The lihtning and shadows added to the general texteure is quite realistic, and conveys the warmth (and coldness where needed ^^) very strongly.
The forms and shapes of all things are sharp yet natural, especially the hair and the girls eyes looks wonderful.
The characters also clearly show their emotions and nature through their faces and body language alike.
Anything to do better are things the artist knows better than anyone else, since from now on it is just a matter of opinion.
Such dedication to arts is just... enviable.

If it's about European...well... I think both European and American look are looking down to each other XD However, educated people of both races won't do that.

Trivia fact: I actually Amelia's expression should't have to be looked that sweet (I'm a romance twister, remember? XD). Originally, I wanted to draw her having mischievous troll face while poking Arden. Like she hold her laughter or something. But it turned out totally different after coloring *that's the mystery of coloring XD
I wonder whether Arden started to wake up due either to "Amelia's teasing poke", "the dragonfly's kiss" or his soldier's instinct could detect some murderous aura XD

Well it's not that I won't get any more epileptic I can get it but I'm drinking antieleptic medicine to prevent it from happening it again. I have mighty pressure in the back of my head if I don't drink it and I can't concentrate normally and my EEG is really bad so they are afraid I could get another epileptic seizures so that's why I need to drink my medicine to prevent that. Yeah I heard those similar stories as well and even seen that in live while I was in the bus when I was in my high school. It was awful.
