This actually just started with a pervy joke about certain parts of Flower that shouldn't get rusty... but then butt-brains started working... Since Flower's frame was made in an experiment to be used in the war, no one in that project thought further about the bots they made surviving the war... Well, Flower and 'Base did (Ash, too, but Soli replaced all his parts, so he's save) and now they have to face the limits of their bodies... which means they start to rust faster than any other 'natural' created cybertronian... And now it reached the visible parts on Flower's frame, his throat is affected the worse, which now causes him to have problems to drag air into his frame to cool his system... which means a constant overheating problem, aka 'fever'. He also has problems to transform with the rusty parts and it doesn't take long for him to lose the functions of parts of his body, he becomes blind in one optic, sudden leaking and his legs stop working... he also stops snoring, since whatever caused that is also affected by the rust. This makes it hard for Ace to find sleep, since he's used to the sound of Flower snoring next to him...
So to be able to check up on him and to safe him from offlining they have to put him into stasis, which he declines and takes the difficult way of being awake and experiencing the pain during the whole procedure. In the end they have move fast to keep Flower from dying because of rusting too fast. They decide to get to cybertron for help. But Flower's spark and processor are in danger to be affected by the rust before they get there, so they transport those parts into a protoform, but since they only have limited recourses they can only make him a body of the size of a Sparkling... which is actually cute, but Flower hates the whole situation...
