I've always enjoyed the works of GoatAnimeDatingSim and others who do images focusing on the guard and the like, and so wanted to try my hand at one too. Sure, Equestria is a pretty peaceful place aside from the runaway growth of baby dragons or rampaging escapee from Tartarus, but they do have a military and *somepony* had to be holding the line for those years before Twilight pulled her nose out of a book and found the Elements of Harmony. I like to think that Captain Spitfire of the Wonderbolts and Captain Armor of the Royal Guard must have proven themselves in a scrape or two as they moved up the ranks.These two make an interesting and fun contrast, a half-generation before Twilight and Dash. I also enjoy the odd coexistence of the flyboy militiary garb of the Wonderbolts and the high fantasy armor of the Royal Guard in the show. Did these two know each other or ever serve together? (Soarin at least went to his wedding.) While we've seen that the Wonderbolts are a military flight group, are they completely separate from the guard Shining commands? Is he even still in command now that he's Prince of the Crystal Empire? Hard to say, but fun to speculate on (for me, at least.)

We need more art and fics with wonderbolts and royal guard together. Tried typing wonderbots and royal guards on deviantart and fimfic and suprised not too much that revolve around the two together. O.o How is there not more art or fics around them as i often see them working together or having a rivarly between the two of them such as bar fights brekaing out between two if them or them exchanging stories between the two of them.

Great picture, it reminds me a lot of Skyrim 
Although as for your point in the description, the Wonderbolts' design is taken from the USAF 'Blue Angels', and The royal guards are not "high fantasy", but are based on the real royal guards of the United Kingdom and Roman Soldiers; He should still be in command, Princes actually very often serve in the Military to a high degree.

He's still in command of SOMETHING, just maybe not the Canterlot Guards. (Probably their Crystal Empire counterparts, if that's the case.) He still gets to wear the custom armor because his rank as "Captain of the Guard" wasn't revoked, just superseded by him being the Prince of the Crystal Empire.

The Wonderbolts are obviously related to, but independent from, the E.U.P. "Royal" Guard. What exactly IS the relationship? How do the "internal politics" of both of these organizations work - their relations to each other, to the Princesses, to the government apparatus, to the Equestrian public in general?
These are all questions that are not going to be addressed by showwriters trying to sell toys to 5 year old girls, but have dramatic potential to match or exceed anything the show has to offer! Come on writers, put some of this in the comics, or make a brony-centric spinoff series! >.<*

I'm fairly sure I've said this before, but wow, I always love your use of color and light. From the various shadowy spots to the lantern's warm glow, this is another fine example of your skills.
Good question re: Shining Armor etc., too. My personal guess would be that Shining Armor's not the captain of the Royal Guard in Canterlot anymore: that post would require him to be on site. But one imagines that he's commander-in-chief or somesuch of the Crystal Empire's guards now instead. (I do wonder who succeeded him in Canterlot, though.)

I'd say you're likely right about Shining Armor... He might not have any military title at all at this point, but being among the highest levels of royalty he can probably still order the guard around and the Princesses likely defer that side of things to him while they focus on other concerns in a crisis. In an non-crisis, you would think that there has to be a new Captain running things in Canterlot, but I doubt the show will ever have need to introduce or identify such a character, unless they want to shift that Flash Sentry guy over to that position.

Really like your armor interpretation! Yes the "Flyboy" gear the Wonderbolts wear is very amusing to this retired USAF MSgt.....heheheh! I like how you have shown that they have had a rough go of it, nobody leaves combat unscathed. A final note....USAF, Army, Marines, and Navy are allies......sort of....hehehehe(So ponies may be the same......)

Yeah, this is an awesome image.
The best part about this has to be just the concept. Not necessarily the idea of these two before they became higher commanders, but just the idea of them interacting. Just like the Friends Forever comic series, I love it when two characters who we might not have considered interacting, do, it creates some really cool ideas on the audience's end. In this case, have they interacted directly like this? What was it like? What did they do together and so forth.

I do like the concept of the Friends Forever comic because of that. I personally enjoy finding possible links between characters that could be explored, and the show invites such mental worldbuilding quite well, I've found.

I find what helps isn't just the fact the show has the opportunities to leave itself open to interpretation and fanside world building, but the fact that people want to. While this is another bash at G3 (sorry folks), something that I think helps is the fact that people want to explore this world, explore the characters and the character's past, present, futures and all possibilities within that, both that which actually does happen and that which does not actually happen. Given the sheer number of people who do that, statistically speaking, we will explore a lot of those possibilities.
