Luna was originally quite an excitable young filly, admiring her older sister greatly and always trying to follow in her footsteps. She was extremely excited when Celestia began to teach her how to raise the Moon which gave her her cutie mark. Originally it was just the moon itself, simple but lovely, however then Celestia kept trying to keep up her image as royalty- Spending less time with Luna, which along with being seemingly shunned by the ponies of Equestria who slept during her beautiful night, caused anguish and jealousy to rise within the originally bright mare that corrupted her into the figure of darkness known as Nightmare Moon. Being banished to the moon was quite the experience, as to her, it was almost like a thousand year sleep which she was not conscious during at all. Strangely enough, being imprisoned in the moon also slowed her aging massively.
Once returning from the moon, the dark splotch on her Cutie Mark appeared as a side effect, along with her coat getting darker. If she hadn't transformed to Nightmare Moon, chances are she'd look a lot more different when she was older. Though her full size looks like Nightmare Moon in terms of color, she has a much more gentle look which separates the two.
