Total success for the characters, but with the floor it kind of reveal the concept 
Are you using any technique to preserve the edges or it is just surgical work an patience ?
When I try to (I suppose) paint your way and apply shadows I can't concerve a proper shape.

what i did with this one is add another layer and use the eyedropper a lot
