Description
I've been having a lot of fun lately by going out into the field behind my house and chasing butterflies. It's quite fun to watch them, and more fun to try and photograph them. They're a good first choice if you're trying to get into animal photography - they aren't too hard to approach once you get the hang of it, and you can get some pretty rewarding shots.
And this one has a story with it! I enjoyed writing this one. It was inspired by the film The Secret of Kells. For anyone familiar with that movie, the scene where they introduce the crystal, and Brother Aidan talks about studying the pattern on a green fly's wing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hidden away in the long, windswept grasses, a tiny twig unfurls her wings.
It is quickly revealed that this twig is not, in fact, a twig at all - rather a beautiful creature who had been perched on a grass stalk. As she flies, she dips and banks, making it impossible for anyone to follow her closely without becoming hopelessly dizzy.
In order to observe a moth, one must watch her from afar. Then, once the moth has alighted on a bit of grass or a flower, one must approach her very slowly and carefully. Even the subtle hint of a shadow falling across her wings will startle her into flight, so it is vital that not only the pursuer’s footsteps are watched, but their shadow’s footsteps as well.
Finally, once both the observer and the moth are still, mere feet away, all can relax. It’s at this time that one can take a moment to observe the gentle pattern that covers her wings.
This particular moth is a beautiful, orange color that contrasts greatly with the green grass stalks towering above her. Tiny black circles create an ink blot pattern that repeats, even smaller, on her lower set of wings.
She clings to the flower, turning in circles, her black eyes deep pools of elegant shadow. Observing the gentle pattern of her life, of her existence, I realize that she is truly a wise little creature, with beauty unnoticed and grace unmatched.
