Mary Jane had her eyes glued to her phone as she walked home. On youtube, the video of her as spider-woman was blowing up and tons of people wanted to see more. She didn't know what to expect from that spider bite from last week but she couldn't be happier. Once she's famous, she'll be able to buy her own place and be far from her abusive father. She would bring her older sister and her mother with her and they'd all finally be happy.

That's when she saw the police cars around her house.

Mary Jane ran as fast as she could and saw crime scene tape around her home and the police comforting her sister, Gayle. MJ ran up to her and grabbed her shoulders, asking what was happening.

Through tears and hysteria, Gayle said, "Dad...Dad killed her! He killed mom! T-They were fighting and h-he g-g-grabbed the kitchen knife--" Gayle sobbed loudly in MJ's arms as she watched her own mother getting carried away on a stretcher.

Later, at the police station-

Gayle had fallen asleep, both emotionally and physically exhausted. Mary Jane laid her older sister down onto the bench in the lobby when she overheard the officers in the other room.

"Phil Watson's car was seen on the outskirts of town, outta gas. He's most likely hiding in the abandoned brewery near there. Head out now."

Grief and sadness were replaced with rage and purpose. MJ grabbed her bag and ran out of the station, ready for revenge.

Later, at the abandoned brewery-

"Figures a miserable drunk like you would hide here."

The blood covered man jumped at the sound and looked behind him. His eyes widened as the red and white clad woman crawled down on the ceiling on all fours. He backed away, tripping over the empty crates and falling onto his back.

"St-Stay back!" the man begged, scooting away until his back met the wall. "Please, I-I have children! Two daughters!"

MJ walked up to him menacingly, her voice completely different from how she's ever sounded before. Full of hatred and disgust. "You also had a wife."

Phil grabbed a nearby bottle and threw it at what was approaching him. MJ grabbed it midair and shattered it with only a squeeze of her hand.

"I-I didn't mean to! I lost my temper and I-I-I couldn't control myself! Please!" Phil was silenced by a strong hand around his neck, lifting him up to his feet and slamming him against the fall.

"I could kill you right now. All it would take is a flick of my wrist and your neck would snap like a toothpick." Mary Jane stared into the eyes of the man that abused her and her family for years. The man that took her mother's life and left both her and her sister as orphans. She was ready to end his miserable life when she suddenly heard her mother's voice in the back of her head.

Years ago--

"MJ, this isn't your fault." Madeline said as she nursed her black eye in the mirror.

"But you didn't have to get hurt." the six year old Mary Jane said. "Dad was mad at me. You didn't have to jump in and get hurt by him again!"

Madeline turned around and knelt down to her daughter. "MJ..." She said, a soft smile appearing on her face "If I have the chance to protect you and your sister, I'll gladly take it. I don't have to get involved but if people didn't get involve, others would be hurt." The mother stood back up. "It's like the superheroes you see on the news. They can choose not to get involved but they do anyway. They do it to protect good people. People like you and your sister."

"Well...I want to protect good people too!" The little girl said. "I want to protect people like you and Gayle!"

Madeline smiled at her daughter and rustled her hair. "You're going to be a great person when you grow up."

As the police carried her webbed up father to the car, MJ swung back to the city. She saw her home off in the distance and stopped, landing on one of the buildings of New York City. The teenager sat down on the cold roof and removed her tear stained mask.

"Mom..." MJ cried "I'm going to use my powers to protect people. I'm going to make sure good people like you and Gayle don't have to suffer. I promise."
