Description This is my Masterpiece. This is my sophmore project for being an art major. The jist is we must create an art peice based off of a theme which was "connection" in order to experience what it's like to produce peice worth showing. This painting is 3 feet by 3 feet, and my first portate. It's not as realistic as it could be cause i wanted to keep a graphic look to it without totally flattening her.

Here's my statement:
"the reason I painted this piece is because of the theme "Connection"

Before me make an assessment, before a stereotype or judgment, we make a connection. If someone sees a scantily clad woman walking down the street, they're first connection might be provocative clothing= promiscuous woman= immorality= sin=sinful immoral woman= slut and therefore you might think "wow what a skank". the truth of the matter is that woman MAY be a very promiscuous woman...or she may be warm and chose to dress light, or maybe she's just following a trend. the point is you don't know until you ask or get to know her. until then you should remember that thousands of people have made a judgment about you, be it true or false, and only until you've proven or disproved that fact will they know if they're right or indeed wrong. So why should we think we should have that right? Why do you think you have the right to know who I am by what I chose to look like? Rather one should wait for an action. After all actions do speak louder than words. In the case of my painting, we have a young woman who is best described as having a "gothic" look. I chose to paint her looking at you because I want you to see the face of the person you love or despise. The person you judge. What's her name? What were her parent's like? How does she feel? I wish I could paint feeling, but alas I can only evoke it and interpret it. To me, this girl is art, not only in her appearance but because she like myself, was created with purpose, the ability to love and be loved, to hurt and hate. I understand why you would be intimidated. Here is someone who is comfortable with things that may be considered "abnormal". That makes you uncomfortable, but why? Is it the fear of the unknown or are you simply assessing that she must be evil because she's gothic? That's what many many "Christian" mothers have concluded upon setting eyes on her. With no other information but her face and clothes they decided to treat her as if she was unwelcome and ugly. So while I understand one's initial inclinations to categorize someone based on what you think you know, when in fact you may not know a fraction of it. We have, indeed, no right to make a final assessment. To be honest how dare you assume anything about someone just by their choice of dress? Especially if you claim to be a Christian, the very people who are supposed to EXEMPLIFY Christ's love and compassion. Did he not say the greatest commandment on earth was to love your neighbor as yourself?

What do you connect when you see a black man in baggy clothes? What do you connect when you see a grown man cry? Or a woman with large breasts? Or a child with dirty clothes? Or your daughter dressed in black? or your son with interests in rock and roll?

What do you connect when I tell you this is my Bella Maria?"
