Labyrinth of the Castle - Vs. Eggman's Smiley Bomb

Sonic, with the goal of removing his diabolical footwear in sight, spins towards the final obstacle this twisted labyrinth has left. With 4 of the 6 Chaos Emeralds in his possession, will he ever see the last two and run free again?...

So, I finally just played Sonic Labyrinth seriously for once, and shut out all of the snide remarks about it that had been crammed into my mind, and it wasn't honestly that bad. Would I want to go through a couple of those levels (mainly 4-3) without a walkthrough handy... probably not.

Not too many notes here. I took some creative liberties due to the lack of detail in the sprites.

I actually like that game. It put emphasis on the Spin Dash which until recently, had fallen out of use (Sonic's trademark move not being used is actually kind of big). And it was WAY better than SONIC'06 (I could go without the glitches and Elise. Love Silver though.).

Indeed, the Spin Dash could always use more love. What I'd like to see return is the realistic pinball physics that made the Spin Dash worthwhile and fun to use. Lost World was a decent first step towards getting Sonic's classic repertoire of moves back, now we just need the physics to back them up.

Yes I was thrilled to have the Spin Dash back in LOST WORLD in almost traditional form (wasn't quite there because if you hold down the ZL button while Spinning, he'll continue to Spin Dash even when jumping until you cancel it manually by double jumping, not that I'm complaining)

Indeed Lost World's Spin Dash mechanics seemed like a way for Sonic Team to say "Look guys, if you want to boost, you still can! Kinda!"
It just seemed like they should have focused more on making the Spin Dash its own thing, not tampered by other moves' mechanics.

I want kind off them to make another with emphasis on Sonic's signature move instead of the Homing Attack. It starts off like the classic Spin Dash, but as the progresses you'd get to do more things with, with old enhancements like the Light Speed Dash and Light Speed Attack, to never before seen things, but still keeping the core, pinball Spin Dash the key point.

I'm kinda bummed out that Sonic Labyrinth failed to get released in NA for some reason... (It was slated for july on the 3DS eshop), and has been waiting in a coming soon section for over 4 months. I don't care if people hate it, Sonic 06 and Spinball Game Gear are far worse. These boss battles are what I like about this game.

Yeah, "Sonic Labyrinth" wasn't by far a bad game. I kinda liked the unique gameplay it featured with the isometric viewpoint (simular to Chronicals & 3D Blast) and using the spindash to get around, and collect keys in the game's mazes.

Nice recreation of the game's final boss.

Once you got over the little unorthodox quirks of it, this game actually did play quite interestingly. Some of the door warping could give you a headache, though.

Indeed, hehe. The game also has a hidden bonus stage. (You get a code/hint on how to access it during the game's ending.)

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to Beau-Skunk [2009-08-06 14:54:24 +0000 UTC]

Funny thing, without even having played the game, I read about it so heavily that I knew exactly where the bonus stage was and how to get into it. I succeeded in doing it while playing through SADX's version of the game, but died when I got back into the stage proper, and I think I lost the last emerald because of that, because I ended up with the bad ending. Went through it again on my computer with savestates, and nailed the perfect ending.

I see, I should try to get the "good ending" to that game sometime. It certainlly does give the game more replay value.

Pingurules In reply to Beau-Skunk [2014-10-29 10:59:31 +0000 UTC]

The difference is that in the bad ending, it said
"But it is not
Perfect!"

And the good ending said
"It is perfect!
Wonderful!"

Or something like that.

Ah, very cool work.

I tried to play it for fun on the Game Gear version in Sonic Adventure DX...but I couldn't get past the first boss! D: That's probably the only occasion in any video game where I couldn't. o__o

Not one of my favourite games, but as for the image you've done a grate job considering the lack of reference.
I like the simplicity of using Eggman's logo on his shoes, rather than keeping them just that salmon colour.
if i'm honest, the wall could be better, i think the perspective looks off slightly. Saying that, everything else looks absolutely fine, especially the spin dash

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to TrueKaoz [2009-07-31 16:10:45 +0000 UTC]

The idea of the Eggman insignia comes from this page's top image, [link] which I find quite amusing.
I might have an idea as to what is causing the wall perspective issue. I applied equal distortion to both "sides", essentially creating an idealized, orthographic view. I'll keep that in mind.

TrueKaoz In reply to Hazard-the-Porgoyle [2009-08-01 12:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Was that official art? I never remember seeing that but then again the game looks different to what I remembered, it looks somewhat brighter.
I see, you use photo shop don't you?
In CS3 there's a perspective tool called vanishing point, that could be something worth looking at, if you do have CS3, not sure if it was in earlier versions...

Hazard-the-Porgoyle In reply to TrueKaoz [2009-08-01 15:11:20 +0000 UTC]

It comes from the JP manual for sure, and I don't know if it appears in others.
I'm still on 7.0 And... actually...I'll be back to typing in five minutes. Okay, I'm back, and I applied some of the perspective effects needed. Just needed to get over a hump. I'm not sure if it's noticeable enough to make a difference, but it's something.

Figures, there manuals are probably way better lol

I see, we were using that at college last year, bit of a pain working from 2 versions.

Sounds good, even if not, it could help with future projects perhaps?

it's bad if i said i enjoy this game ? a little.

it's not the greatest but sure this game is a huge challenge for sonic with only the spin dash

the last boss has a catchy music

If other people just ignored the excessively bad comments this game receives, and just played it for the sake of playing it, they would also see that it is not too bad.
Love that final boss music, too.

I knew that was what you meant from the beginning, but you might have wanted to state it in some way. Just saying the game's horrible and nothing else makes for a lousy comment. You get my point, right?

I have played this game and I have beaten it a couple times before. There is one thing that I do like about the game and that's the boss battles like the one you drew.

But still, the idea of giving Sonic slow shoes was just poor.
