Well, on a cecaelia will be pictured either capturing and/or fighting a mermaid, or transforming a human into a mermaid.  When pictured together, cecaelia are usually portrayed as an antagonist (i.e. a "sea witch").

Oh, I didn't say it was a standard or rule!  It stems mostly from 's iconic image and role as a villain (which is certainly deserved IMO, she's an awesome character!), and that cecaelia are not prevailant in pop culture beyond that one example.

But there are a number of mer-philes (like myself) who advocate for an increased awareness and variety to the image of cecaelia in art beyond simply being "a sea witch".  For example, they can play lots of musical instruments at the same time, can hang on to many things at once (or simply multi-task really easily), and can give great massages and awesome hugs!
