Oooh very beautiful photograph! I've never tried HDR, do you have to use a tripod in order to do it? (i'm assuming you must have, with the long shutter speed and all) I've heard some newer cameras have an automatic HDR setting, I don't think mine does. (or at least, I've never known about it)

HDR is actually quite easy to do. An HDR is a composite of 3 (possibly more) images, one properly exposed, one under exposed, and one over exposed. You must use a tripod in order to make these photos the same but with different exposures. You then use post processing to merge the photos together.

I've always wanted to try HDR, and I think I'l go out and give it a shot tonight. How much do you usually over/under expose the images? I guess its probably a little of trial and error, and quite dependant on what the desired outcome is.

yep, i usually give it about +-2 stops. Also, play with different methods of post processing.
