Description IronMan visits Yosemite. A friend took my picture on our last Yosemite trip, Never go outdoors unprepared

Yes I used Pepakura to design and Create the Helmet, then painted it completely. I took the LED eyes out for the trip just so I could see around. The kiss is still there from ComiCon lol

Pepakura + fiberglass, correct?

I'm planning on doing a full body Alphonse Elric suit using Pepakura models as a base to work from.

Your helmet looks great, dude!

Thanks man, yup yup. This was the first pep i did, the next time im gonna make a mold and use resin so I can have a few extra if needed for friends. Thatll be awesome, post up your progress. Will this be your first pep? A good site/forum for pepakura and modeling design/ creation is therpf.com

I've done some basic papercraft models, but never done any sort of useable piece. The Alphonse suit is actually going to be the first one of those I do, but the body will most likely be made of PVC sheeting, as opposed to fiberglass.

I'm planning on doing that, learning from it, then making a War Machine suit that will be all fiberglass and at least partially mechanized and outfitted with LED's and such. But that's much later.

Awesome! Then I HIGHLY suggest you check out therpf.com . There is SO many tutorials and guides on how best to execute a piece, theyre very cool and helpful. WarMachine will be so Awesome, thats one of the works I wanna do down the road after a full IronMan suit. I wish you the best mate, and please post progress pics and/pr questions, I'm very interested in seeing it to completion

Hey man, sorry for the late reply.

Huge thanks on the rpf site link - lots of good info there. I'm actually talking with a guy I know who might be able to do some 3d printing for me, so maybe some of the more complex shapes I can get made by him (helmet mainly, way too many little cardstock strips on that sumbitch) and the rest I can do myself via fiberglass. Never used fiberglass/resin in my life, but I am a custom motorcycle enthusiast and have a lot of tutorials and people who can help me out, so I should be ok.

I'll be sending off some test .obj files to the guy tonight to see if the 3d printer produces quality items (just small stuff like articulated fingers). If it does, then we'll go from there.

Thanks again for the link!

Awesome! 3d printing is the best, cuz like you said all the intricate pieces in the helmet get really difficult and annoying. I look forward to your progress, take it easy

Hey man. The 3D printing looks like it may end up being a bust - the .obj models I had weren't done right and I have no 3d modeling experience myself, so I can't edit them or make them right. I am about 50% of the way through making the Alphonse Elric helmet I am planning on fiberglassing though. The way I decided to do it was to cover the outside with epoxy/resin to get a hard sandable surface, and layer the inside with strips of fiberglass (to avoid messing up the finer details of the helmet by laying over them with glass on the outside).

How did you make your helmet?

Hey dude, sorry for the super late reply. Thats sucks about the 3d printing :/ You basically got it right man. First you pep the helmet with the proper proportions, then resin the outside of it. Once that sets, line the interior with fiberglass sheets cut to size and resin that, definitely be careful not to layer it too thick or make the pieces too large because you gotta fit your head in there. Then on the outside, now you can get to the detail finish work, you could use bondo or detail clay to smooth over areas before sanding and painting. Of course I condensed about 10 steps into a sentence but youre on the right track.

If youre planning on making a mold so you can make several helmets, thats another path. Again, therpf.com is pretty awesome when it comes to helping out people. You can also buy specialty tools to help you along with some pretty cool stuff. Hope that helps, LMK anything else

All right! Much appreciated, my man. Alphonse helmet is about 80% done now, so I think that in another 4-5 days I might be doing the resin job already.

Thanks for the help. I'll post pics of the WIP in any case.
