Description Halloween is coming up and was in mood for something dark and morbid this time.
I don't really celebrate those kind of holidays but lately I saw a lot of pictures from this Latin-American Holiday "Dia de muertos" --> [link] which takes place around Halloween (or Samhain or Allerheiligen... whatever you want to call it). I just love the way people dress up for that day and I always wanted to try that kind of makeup.

I tell you... The makeup took me ages! And it still looks kind of messy. I'm not really satisfied with it, but I couldn't do any better on my own.

I hope you enjoy it anyways. I wish you all a happy Halloween/Samhain/Dia de muertos/Allerheiligen!

Dia de muertos... Dia de los muertos... I don't know how it is really called, since the web offers both variations. Maybe someone Latin-American can help out

EDIT: was so kind to explain that it's "DΓa de muertos" and that this kind of look belongs to La Catrina, The Lady of the Dead. So I decided to update the title. Seems more fitting than the previous one

Hi HeartDriven, the festivity's correct name is just "DΓa De Muertos" and is NOT latin-american, it is a pre-columbian Mexican tradition

This. IS. Amazing! The juxtaposition of whites and blacks really accentuates the elegant macabre of her face. Very well done. Very beautiful.

'Dia De los Muertos' isn't a morbid holiday, per se. It's based around the concept of celebrating the birth of the new through the death of the old.

Everything about the festival reeks with symbolism. Like, the painted skulls, they're just one example. Since the festvial was established, the skulls are always painted smiling, and the reason why is because they're laughing. Laughing at how trivial all our pissing matches in mortality are. They're laughing because they're amused and pitied by the living.

All this stuff about adressing death ritualistically goes all the the way back to the danse in europe. They're used to an elaborate ritual at Mass called, 'The danse of Death', where in succession all matter of mortal beings were coerced to join the revolving ring of dancers.

In a way, 'Dia Del Los Muertos' is the only holiday besides Christmas I can honestly respect.
Well, that and Thanksgiving, something about the combination of mindless eating and mindless sports enthusiasm just really seals the deal for me.

If you want here's some tremendous pictures of la Calaca (it's a nickname for Death) since you said you had trouble on your own.

There's a less elaborate Calaca at the end of the request, if that's what you want.

Eh, screw it. Here's some cool music to comemorate the month.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I really appreciate it. Don't worry about the length of the message. I can understand your enthusiasm.

Don't get me wrong I don't think DΓa de muertos is a morbid Holiday. I think it's a beautiful and worthy way to celebrate Life and Death. I would LOVE to have a holiday like that here in Germany. Instead of celebrating a color- and cheerful holiday, we spend the holidays lamenting and mourning. Well, those people who actually remember "Allerheiligen" and those are not much. Sometimes I have the feeling we are such a serious nation. All our traditions are soooo solemn and... well, no fun a all.

Thank you fΓΌr the links. I know the paintings of Sylvia Li. I actually had the one with the green background lying beside me, while I was doing the makeup. That's how I got the idea of making my hair grey

And of course... Desperado LOVE that movie

Ah, but 'Dia De Los Muertos' is all about being colorful and cheerfull. Believe me. It's a big to do down south.

Anyway you say it is ok, there is no real difference.

Although there IS a difference in the actual day and the propper name it recieves: at least in the central part of MΓ©xico we say that in November 1st we celebrate/honour the day of all saints (although this is biased by catholicism of course) meaning that we celebrate the dead of all small children, and on the 2nd we celebrate/honour the day of the faithfull departed, meaning all grown ups.

Hope this helped and great work BTW!

oh yeah... day of all saints... that's the day we celebrate here in Germany also. Well... "celebrate" means that we don't have to go to work on that day It's called "Allerheiligen"... Thanks again for your comment
