A pencil drawing of my character Kage. I'm incredibly pleased with it, although the background is less than perfect.Figure drawn and shaded with mechanical pencil.

not bad, not bad at all. Really nice rendering on the cloth and good work on the metal sheen. As you said background is hurting it. Might consider taking a blending stub to it. Should ease things up a bit and help make your character pop out more.
