Description

This is Crescent, my 8 year old female leucistic Texas Rat Snake, posing with some Autumn gourds.

Unfortunately it's not the clearest picture focus-wise, but I love her tongue and the blurry effect of her tongue gives it a look of speed.

How do you get your snake to do this

Hello Zachary! For this picture, it wasn't that difficult. I just put Crescent among the gourds on the black cloth, and see how she would coil around them. I took several pictures of her with the gourds until I got a few that I liked.

Hello and thank-you for asking. I've never been asked this before...but before I say yes will you be drawing her from this picture? How will you be drawing her?

Yes, I'll draw her in that postition, but change the color and the head to be more cartoon like. I only you the position as a reference.

Aw... What an elegant beauty! She looks so clean and pure compared to the earthy tones of the gourds. I agree about her tongue. It looks a little like it's moving right now, even though I know it's a still picture. Her head is just a wee bit out of focus, but animals can be unpredictable models like that.

Oooo... I just was to stroke Crescent's pretty little head. ^^

I've heard rat snakes can be aggressive feeders. They're related to corn and milk snakes right? The exact term escapes me at the moment. My apologies.

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to EchosOfMemories [2013-11-16 14:30:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank-you Echo! I wish her head was a bit more in focus, but her blurry tongue gives it a look of fast speed which I like too.. It can certainly be hard taking pictures of my snakes and geckos, but it's so fun too!

Texas Rats can be a little aggressive, especially when young. In fact, Crescent's previous owner had sold her back to the pet store because she was constantly biting him. Then I bought her and she's such a perfect sweetheart with me...she has given me a few bites in the first 2 years I had her, but not many, and now not at all.

Texas Rat Snakes are in the same family as Corn snakes, which makes them closely related, but not milk snakes though.

Sounds like you have a way with reptiles. That's really cool. I'm glad she ended up in such a great home. Stories of animals that bite always make me nervous because they don't always turn out very well. It just goes to show your dedication to your scalies that you'd work through something like that. Well, I'm sure it wasn't anything too crazy, but either way.

Not milk snakes? But surely they're related to corn snakes. I don't know any other snakes named after food... (Thinks she's funny. XP)

Thank-you! Yes, I love Crescent so much, I'm so glad  have her. She's my serpent-sister. She's not the slightest bit head-shy. She'll let me touch her touch and I even give her kisses right on the mouth. I think she likes the attection too.

I can see why! Crescent is a stunning specimen! Her gorgeous white skin is lovely! Are white snakes very common? I've seen photos and footage of white tigers and lions. (A lovely photographer named *morho has a wonderful collection of white lion pics. Her prettiest photos are of lion couple Haldir [a white male] and his tawny mate, Jawa! ) However, I had no idea (until I was introduced to Crescent) that snakes could also be completely white! That is one reason why she fascinates me so!

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to PurpleInk777 [2013-11-16 16:08:54 +0000 UTC]

Crescent is a leucistic variety of Texas Rat Snake...leucistic is a recessive gene that effects a lack of pigmentation, resulting in a pure white snake with blue-grey eyes (unlike the red eyes of the albino). Leucistic is fairly common with the Texas Rats, and with Royal Pythons too, and there is a morph of Corn Snake called a "Snow" that is white too with a bit of yellow. If you ever have a chance to go to a Reptile Expo you will see such amazing animals... I think I asked you before if you had Reptile shows and you said that you didn`t, but I hope one day you will have a chance to go...

PurpleInk777 In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2013-11-17 00:00:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for sharing! I see that this is a common trait (recessive gene) in snakes like Crescent, Royal Pythons, as well as those snowy corn snakes!

Which makes me think: Regarding white lions and tigers, who have bluish-green eyes - these animals have a very similar recessive gene, culminating in a white coat and bluish eyes! Which, unlike their golden or tawny brethren, makes them all the more striking, I believe! What a shame, then, that these miraculous animals are bred and inbred - sometimes together (lionXtiger and/or tigerXlion) as freaks!

I hope to see more of Crescent's kind (leucistic snakes) over time! I know Crescent is such a beautiful serpent!

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to PurpleInk777 [2013-11-21 17:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I don't believe in inbreeding animals to get all of those traits, especially cross-breeding species-it weakens the genes over time. I didn't know that people bred lions with tigers. I don't agree with that.

PurpleInk777 In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2013-11-23 03:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Neither do I. For one thing, it is infinitely cruel! I agree.

animals.pawnation.com/differen… describes what goes on, when lions, tigers and other big cats are bred together! It's disgusting, really!

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to PurpleInk777 [2013-11-23 15:25:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I just went to the link and I think it's cruel and disgusting too. Why would people want to do that? What's wrong with the species just as they are and the way Mother Nature intended? I think it's arrogant humans just playing God and just because science has advanced enough so that they could do that, they don't stop to think if they should do that...

bigcatrescue.org/liger-facts/ explains the reasons behind such lunacy. Also, this rather stupid quote from the 2004 smash-hit, Napoleon Dynamite:

Deb: What are you drawing?
Napoleon Dynamite: A liger.
Deb: What's a liger?
Napoleon Dynamite: It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

In other words, the hybrids are merely freaks, for idiots' amusement!

As for those of us who possess actual human intelligence, we'd prefer to see 'lions and tigers and bears, oh my'!

Anything else is just insane - especially regarding the animals' health and safety!

Yes, I just watched that video and it was so touching and moving-especially with that extremely sensitive and beautiful piano accompaniment...

PurpleInk777 In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2013-11-28 02:19:26 +0000 UTC]

I agree: Unnaturally-bred animals such as the liger in the video, really suffer! And all because of stupid movies like Napoleon Dynamite, as well as idiotic spending!

The brave young lady who made the video, really made a point of emphasising just how truly cruel and unnecessary hybridisation is! Just look at what can happen to domesticated animals, once people play God with them! In short, very sad stuff...
