Description It's finally started to happen! My eggs have started to hatch! I checked on them early this afternoon and I actually screamed when I saw that one had started to hatch. You can see it's the egg on the right, the little baby's nose is just peeking out and egg fluid is oozing out around it.

The egg on the left has not hatched yet but is very close to that time...I thought this would be a good opportunity to show what I meant by eggs "dimpling inward" just prior to hatching. Snake eggs lose their perfectly oval shape and start to collapse like this one on the left because the yolk is being absorbed into the little snakeling's body, prior to hatching.

These are corn snake eggs.

I have heard about this...most of the big-time breeders-the ones that have a large collection and breed for profit-do cut the eggs open when they are due to hatch to help out the snakelings, especially any babies that might be too weak to hatch.

As for me I would never do this...I would be afraid of accidently cutting the baby. Because at that stage the baby is not lying dormant, but is usually wiggling around inside, getting ready to hatch. For me, I'd rather let nature take its course and let the eggs hatch naturally. It's safer and it's more fun to watch the eggs hatch naturally. And I get a pretty good hatch rate, 23 out of 24 of my eggs successfully hatched. But that one that didn't, I would be afraid of injuring it if I tried to help it out, or if it was already dead, it would upset me so much to see a dead baby. I rather leave it in Mother Nature's hands. If the babies are healthy and strong then they will hatch without help from me.

Yea, I was cringing when they were cutting open the eggs because he was practically just millimetres away from cutting the little snake inside, and in some cases there was blood but since I've never witnessed any sort of hatching, I wasn't sure if it was normal or not. He certainly didn't seem phased, but it was scaring me. (As well as most of the people who had seen the video, obviously, as it has a very bad rating and a lot of people are like "Couldn't you wait?" "Don't cut the egg!!") I know I never could... My right hand has this very faint shiver that makes trying to thread a needle without those little wire threaders almost impossible. I would be too scared that I'd slip just a hair and hurt the baby. x.x

The blood could be from the umbilical cord and placenta. There is a little bit of blood during hatching. Not a whole lot though, just a trace...but still I would rather leave it in Mother Nature's hands...it would be too easy to hurt the baby. I couldn't do it either...

There's nothing quite like seeing pippies for the first time in a clutch! My last clutch surprised me and hatched about 10 days earlier than scheduled. I went to check on them and I had a bunch of babies slithering around all over the place! I SQUEED at the top of my voice! Sadly one of the little mites didn't develop completely in the egg and had to be thrown out, though and one was severely kinked up his entire spine. The other four turned out perfect though!

Yes, it's so exciting when you go to check on your eggs and you see a little nose peeking out of the top of the shell! What kind of snake babies were they? I'm glad you had that wonderful experience too, and I'm sad that two didn't make it...

MinLynn In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2012-03-26 23:29:06 +0000 UTC]

They were cornsnakes as well! They weren't my eggs. Some guy let two of his snakes breed at a year old and when momma layed 6 eggs he had no clue what to do so he gave them to me to incubate. The kinked one looked like he was going to be okay with just a kink at his tail but with each shed his kinks traveled more and more up his spine and he refused to eat. I eventually had to euthanize him to be humane. I now have 3 amels and a normal het for snow.

So far 7 babies have come completely out of their egg shell and I have them set up in their own little containers...it's so exciting today! There are 3 more eggs in the process of hatching and I've just been sitting in front of the container watching them. Early this morning I've even got a baby that I have no idea what the morph is. The other babies are regulars and Okeetees, but this one baby is something different, kind of pinkish but she/he has black eyes, so I know it's not an albino...it'll be interesting to see how her color develops and changes.

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to Avenvia [2012-03-24 15:56:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Baby snakes are very reluctant to leave the security of their egg shells. 24 hours later and this baby is still in the same pose, with just his head poking out as he absorbs the rest of the yolk and his system adjusts to breathing air. It's hard to be patient, I so want to see the rest of his body...but it's an uncertain world he is preparing to slither into...

Avenvia In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2012-03-25 21:58:38 +0000 UTC]

They take ages to come out, I always imagined that it wouldn't be a very long process! Is he out now?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to Avenvia [2012-03-26 00:02:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, he came out yesterday afternoon, and so did 3 others...so I guess on average they spent about 24 hours just sitting in their egg shell with their little heads sticking out...they look so cute. I took a lot more pictures of the hatching process last night. I'll upload them in a few days.

Baby snakes are a lot different than baby geckos...snakes are secretive animals and like to hide in a shelter than being out in the open. So whenever I lifted off the lid to check on the eggs, the babies would pull their heads back into their egg shells.

Avenvia In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2012-03-26 22:29:51 +0000 UTC]

Awh, that really does sound cute! I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures. Will you be naming them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Heather-Chrysalis In reply to Avenvia [2012-03-27 01:49:21 +0000 UTC]

No, I won't be naming them Too many babies for me to keep, I'll have to find home for them all, probably advertizing on kijiji. And it would be too hard to part with animals I've already named. I may hold onto one though, to watch him/her grow up for a while. That one I will name.

Avenvia In reply to Heather-Chrysalis [2012-03-27 17:57:09 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense, good luck in finding homes! Though I remember you managed it with all your little spiders, so snakes will probably seem easy after that!

If only I could have one, but I bet it's another thing university doesn't like...

Snakes make such quiet pets that you could probably sneak it into the dorm and no one will know But I hope you can get your own place one day and then you can have lots of pets!

Thank-you! Yes, the miracle of life makes my eyes all misty! It's such a wonderful feeling to watch new life hatch in your home and to know that you helped it's survival.

I think it's either a regular or an okeetee. The mother is an okeetee.
