While researching leprechauns I was surprised to learn that prior to the 20th century it was generally held that they wore red, not green! The most likely explanation for the modern day leprechaun appearance is that green is the national Irish color, so it just makes sense that leprechauns would prefer green.
Have you ever seen a leprechaun in a red outfit? I don't think I have.... If I did I probably mistook them for a gnome or Santa Claus.
