Ya, I was browsing through there earlier, there is some cute stuff. I was reading through the poser tutorials and such. I have never really used poser (I make and pose my stuff in the programs I learned at school... so maya, xsi, mudbox, z-brush), but its really interesting to see what you can do with it.

I use to do my own programming... back in the day, lol. I didn't work in flash at the time, just java script and stuff. I have had my web page with drag and drop games on it for a very long time. But when Brad started trying to date me, he gave me a save button for my dolls. It was the begining of the end, lmao. I haven't let the poor man rest in a very long time now. I sort of got him into flash and now into casual game design (before this he did mostly web programming and 3d animation).

I just have so many ideas, and they are so much quicker to realize with both of us than it was on my own. I use to mess around with game engines and such, trying to make them do what I saw in my head. Its sooo much better that he can just build it, lol. We have to google a lot of stuff, since we are both self taught for most of this. But it really is wonderful. There is nothing we would like more than to make our living this way

I wish that we could do our own music, but Brad only plays drums (not so great for background music, lol) and I have put all my efforts into the visual arts. We have discovered lots of great music thats free for different types of projects though, so thats how we have been solving that problem for now.

Gah, I talk to much, lol.

You are a very lucky person - I wish I had someone to share my creative mind with. I have to learn and do everything myself, and have nobody to ask when I have questions. -_-

heatherleeharvey In reply to ken1171 [2010-04-26 04:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Ya, its really wonderful. We can't always help each other, but even having someone to bounce ideas off is worth while. I never thought I would luck out like this in life, but I would never go back. Even though we spend far too many friday nights "working" lol.

On the other hand though, I don't think it needs to be a partner. You make the right friends and you will get the feedback and such you need. I use to work with my parents and friends a lot too on the art and such I use to do

I see what you mean, but nobody I know in real life or the web actually knows anything about AS3 programming. Most people are still using AS2 and/or cannot answer my more advanced AS3 questions (or even the simple ones). I have signed up with ActionScript forums, and still can't get a usable answer (or any answer at all) whenever I get tied up.

Over my desk I have this growing pile of Flash/AS3 programming books, but they only go up to a certain level and stop there. Even the books that claim to be advanced don't really go that far. Sometimes I find a new book that covers 95% the same contents as other books I already have, but I buy it because of one single chapter that talks about something I wanted to learn. By now I believe more than half my Flash books are on that category, so it can be really frustrating.

How cool it would be to know someone who actually knows AS3 and I could just ask them directly. Sounds like a dream to me. Not only AS3, but 3D modeling, color theory, and all the other things I use everyday. ^^

heatherleeharvey In reply to ken1171 [2010-04-26 21:39:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, neither of us really had real life help like that either. Brad went to school for 3d animation, not the stuff we do now. And by the time I went school (studio art, for colour theory and such), I had already mastered most of what they showed me. It was still good for my self confidence though. I did go to school for 3d modeling just last year, but I haven't finished my demo reel for that yet (or used it for too much). I got side tracked by our site stuff.

As far as programming goes... your best bet is to learn about programming in general. That is what Brad has done. We go to the library and get stacks of books on design patterns, flash, object oriented programming, game design, etc... Its much cheaper than buying them

As far as modeling, colour theory, etc... reference is your best friend. If you are trying to light something in a cool way, find a photo that uses similar lighting and try to mimic it. If you are drawing a character, colour pick a pallette from somewhere and make sure you have reference for every part of them. If its a fantasy creature, find real life creatures and such that you can combine to create it (A cats pose for a dragon for example). Doing that stuff again and again is what teaches you those things. Eventually, you just know how your colours should look, where your muscles attach, where you should exagerate detail, and where you should tone it down.

My work has improved by leaps and bounds since I started doing these makers. Every day I learn more about anatomy, and composition. If you want an example... compare the horse maker to the animal maker. The animal maker is so much better it isn't even funny And it took me a fraction of the time to redesign my site layout this time compared to last. I still have a really long way to go, but practice and reference are definatly the way to get there.

It is nice to have someone to ask when you get really stuck, but at the same time most of those people got where they are the same way you are now What I really look for, and what I found with Brad, is someone who can share the excitement of creation, and who is there to bounce ideas off

When it comes to programming, that's what I did for living for the last 3 decades, so I have no lack of experience with it. The thing is that AS3 and Flash have their own ways of doing things, and some cannot be guessed. I have 2 degrees in Computer Science and decades of experience with commercial programming in the industry, but each programming language has their own quirks. ActionScript has existed for a long time, but it has only become usable to me after version 3 came out, where the whole thing became object-oriented and compliant with international ECMA standards.

Even though AS3 is now object-oriented, some of its implementation is still poorly relying on old standards where data type is not strongly enforced and variables can be used without being declared. Working with AS3 lists and arrays can also be quite inefficient exactly because each array element can be of any type, which results into poor performance. Rumors claim that this will be fixed in upcoming revisions.

In my case it was complicated to become a graphic artist because my background is all in science. At least the idea was not completely absurd because my major was in computer graphics. I am also a musician, so in my gallery I sometimes try to put it all together, with programming, 3DCG and music. Unfortunately, at dA people only care for visual arts and tend to ignore everything else.

heatherleeharvey In reply to ken1171 [2010-04-26 23:01:36 +0000 UTC]

lol... well if you have 3 decades of programming experience, I don't think you are likely to meet anyone that you can easily asked questions of. The only troubles we have run into with it are more limitations of our server or the APIs and things that we need to work through (when working on games for things like whirled, facebook, or mochi). It definately causes some frustrating moments now and then, and I'm glad its Brad dealing with it and not me, but it works for most of our projects. You must be trying to do things on a more complicated scale than us

But becoming a better artist really is the same no matter what your background. You need to put in the same number of hours you did into your programming to get an equal result. I think that is really one of the big problems with being a "Jack of all trades" type. Its hard to become supremely good at anyone thing. I know that art wise, my intrests have always been too wide spread to become really good at any one medium or style. I don't really mind being just "decent" rather than awesome though. It is expressing the idea that I like best. I don't think I was ever meant to be a photo realistic painter or anything like that. Brad runs into similar problems. People see his resume and don't know if they should lump him in with the web designers, the programmers, or the animators.

I don't think DA is the best showcase for music, mainly because people see thumbnails of new deviations and such, so they click through and check it out. Its really hard to do that with music. I actually mostly keep my sound muted or play mp3s. I rarely check out music anywhere online unless I am interested in the full effect of a game or something. It is still good that you can do that aspect though. Its been very frustrating to go and find music all the time

I've only got started with ActionScript in 2008, which more or less coincides when version 3 came out. My very first question was how to embed FLV video into Flash and if it was possible to control the playback speed. By that time *nobody* in the forums knew the answer, while some thought it was impossible (either things). That one alone took me almost a year to figure out, and in the end it was much simpler than I imagined. Here [link] is an example, where the animation is a FLV video and the blue slider controls the playback speed. I am not sure if this example is really "advanced", but it shows one thing that got me stuck for a long time. I suspect most AS programmers don't really use object oriented methodology at all, and that explains why nobody in the forums knew how to get this done.

Another example is how to globally keep high scores of a game. All of the Flash/AS3 books I have only cover how to do that locally, but never globally. I am still on the dark on that one. Yet another example is how to keep people from stealing my games and uploading them somewhere else. This one I have nailed down by hacking into MochiAds code, and it comes down to be [again] very simple to do - just a few lines of code. Here again, either people from AS forums and books couldn't give me a clue. How to create a simple loader for my Flash programs was a nightmare to figure out as well, but this is because Adobe really made it more complicated than it should be for something this trivial.

As you can see, I am not even sure if those things are that much "advanced", but some are essential things I couldn't go without.

I really don't know what is "advanced" and what isn't, lol. For most of our projects I just decide what I want something to do, and then Brad gets the fun job of making it go.

The people on the forums and such might be more help now though. Everyone has had time to learn. And I know that the people that hire Brad for stuff seem to work in object oriented flash stuff. It might be worth asking again.

About 3 weeks ago I posted another question about creating AS3 components, and as usual, no answer. The only existing book that covers that is for AS2, where the classes are all different and nearly nothing can be used with AS3. The manual and online support are basically retarded, offering shallow/vague info and zero code examples. -_-

heatherleeharvey In reply to ken1171 [2010-04-28 17:58:53 +0000 UTC]

Well... if the information is that scarce, its time to start a blog. LOL. If you are looking, it means lots of other people are too. And if the only place they can find the information is from you, then the page will be very popular. You might as well post your solutions when you find them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to heatherleeharvey [2010-04-29 00:21:51 +0000 UTC]

Truth is that I am still in the dark when it comes to creating AS3 components. Two of my books show how to have it done in AS2, but everything changed in AS3 and no info could be reused. One of the books shows how to create a component in AS3, but not how to export it so that it can be made reusable. That's why I am still creating AS3 libraries for my daily needs, but components would better suit some of it, because different programs need different versions of a class, but changing a class affects all programs that use it. On the other hand, components can be instantiated and customized for particular needs without having to change the super class.

Looking at code examples of AS3 programs created by other people, all I found was brute force and complete lack of methodology or structure. Not to mention most of this people are still using stone age AS2...
