Description I could not resist the $20 baby Ball Pythons at the White Plains Reptile Show. I fell in love with this one as soon as I saw his pattern. He's very close to having a black dorsal stripe.

Whoa, black stripe! Neat! He's so adorable!

It's amazing how fast they grow, too. I can't believe how tiny my little one used to be...and now she's over three feet long.

This... is gorgeous. *______* I'd really like to own some snakes and I've been reading up on them for awhile now, but I can't get one until I move out of the house since my mom's deathly afraid of them. T_T Anyway, I really love how you captured such a clear, crisp photo, he looks like a real gem.

Ooooh so beautiful! This makes me want to actually get my own pythons. My ex had three for a long time... shortly after we split, I heard he took the female and had her put down... which is a good thing, considering nothing we tried could get her to eat, or the horrible sores on her to go away...

So seeing this playful looking fellow makes me smile

She may have had what is called septicemia--basically an infection of the blood. It can be very difficult to get rid of. A friend of mine had a rescue with it and it was very hard to make the snake better (I think it also died after a year or two).

I was worried this one might have had something, but he seems to be doing well. If only I could get him to eat on his own!

If he wont eat F/T try a small live prey animal gross but almost always successful. Another thing to remember is that these guys have been known to go for months without eating (my big guy will sometimes fast himself for a month or so normally right around the beginning of winter).

Heh I think this was a rather old comment, but thankfully he started eating on his own...now I just have to wiggle a dead mouse in front of his face and he nabs it! He's much larger than in this photo but he still plays turtle with his hide spot

yvilmonster In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-20 17:26:09 +0000 UTC]

-nods- Kaa is redonkulously affectionate, he only balls up when you lift him out of the tank and then as soon as he realizes he's free he's moving around using me as a tree. He's discovered my gauging hoops in my ears and he uses them to latch his tail on as he hangs around under my arm.
Its fun, until he starts to pull!

HeatherTelesca In reply to secretsyllables [2007-07-14 14:25:27 +0000 UTC]

Most places they are more expensive. This one hadn't eaten yet which is part of the reason. He still isn't eating normally and needs quite a bit of help. If I didn't have experience with snakes, I never would have picked him up, it would have been a waste of money.

Hahahaha! Do you like iguana's? I've seen your geckos. I use to have a baby iguana but my mom had to get give away...

HeatherTelesca In reply to ShadowFoxxx [2007-06-25 03:15:14 +0000 UTC]

I have to say I am not a huge fan of iguanas--the pet trade markets them as an easy to keep animal, but to keep one properly you need the space you would give a cat or dog...and you need to be prepared to deal with behavioral problems with a very large animal. Instead you end up with breeding populations in Florida 10000 strong...and no one wants them around.

I think if they were treated more like the animals they are I would be a bigger fan, but with the way things are right now I wish the pet stores would not sell them. They are very neat animals, but they need the respect they deserve.

ShadowFoxxx In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-06-25 08:15:04 +0000 UTC]

I've never known iguana's to be nasty. I did know one (a very, very old one) that was in a large tank in the pet store. I called him the Old Man. Pretty expensive and his size was impressive. His head was about as big as a melon and the spines were a good two inches long. I could understand how hard it would be to keep one when it gets bigger. A friend of mine has a Rock Python --- I heard those get HUGE! 16+ feet. Scary. My mum use to have a Burmese Python. She fed him chicken and rabbits whenhad to get rid of him one day when he raised his head up like a cobra. Too big. She called him Monty.

True. In Mexico they eat iguana's...my mum had one...she didn't realize it until AFTER she ate her meal. I probably wouldn't want to eat anything that looks like chicken again.

Yeah, the males tend to be aggresive after a year. I've heard a lot of stories where they attack their female keepers because they think they are human and want to mate O_o;;

What?! Yikes! My mum once told me a story her iguana (which use to live on her couch) was being approached by her boyfriend and the lizard was giving all of the signs of, "Get the @#$% away from me, pal!" Mum was telling him, "Let 'em be, he's going to bite you."

Of course, boyfriend says, "Naw! He's not going to bite!"

You can guess what happened.
