I've learned her secret...when she's hungry she will come out of her cave and try to bite my fingers. So I lure her out and take her photo!

Yeah she is totally afraid of my camera...she's happy as can be until I pull my camera out and then she tries to get away...makes it very difficult to take photos of her!

thereseldavis In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-14 17:29:59 +0000 UTC]

Awww, poor thing. Maybe if you left the camera on the ground and she had a chance to sniff it out and be around it when it is not doing anything? I know that works with the bunny when he is affraid of something.

I'm not too familiar with Crested Gecko (or Gecko's in general) habits when meeting one of it's own. She might be aggressive, docile, or even terrified. Or maybe he'll be the one with the weird behavior! Not to mention their breeding season.

Thought of any names yet?

HeatherTelesca In reply to Dellessanna [2007-08-15 02:55:21 +0000 UTC]

I try to hold her a little everyday, but she has always seemed a bit skittish. She also tries to eat my fingers, which can get a little annoying.

I'm learning as I go I guess!

Dellessanna In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-15 03:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh, goodness. She sounds like a handful. I have one that is a biter. Luckily it doesn't hurt.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to Dellessanna [2007-08-15 03:11:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it doesn't hurt much at all thank goodness! When she's hungry she goes after my rings and pinkie fingers...I have to keep her away from them and go get the meal worms so she will calm down lol! I'm hoping that having another lizard in the tank with her will calm her down a bit. It worked with one of my dragons and I hope it works for her!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dellessanna In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-15 03:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Worms? What kind do you give her? I've tried superworms with iffy results. A few go crazy for them a couple won't touch them with a 30 foot pole.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to Dellessanna [2007-08-15 03:26:48 +0000 UTC]

Just meal worms. The breeder I bought her from uses them so she is used to them and goes right after them. (She looks really funny with like 5 sticking out of her mouth at once!) She goes after crickets too, but I don't have those as often for her. The meal worms are convenient and she likes them. I feed her the crested gecko diet too.

My dragons LOVE superworms...they will do all sorts of silly tricks to get their jaws on one!

Dellessanna In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-15 04:33:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh, wow, be careful with those. X_X Crested are really prone towards impaction, and mealies will often do it since they have rather hard exoskeleton's.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to Dellessanna [2007-08-15 15:09:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the dragons are the same way...but I'm not too worried as she poops on me every time I take her out in addition to eating my fingers! In all seriousness, I do watch for impaction in both her and my dragons...they all get good belly rubs and warm swims if I think something is wrong. The crested gecko diet seems to push things around too.

Great to hear someone responsible. I've found a lot of people just don't care or watch for signs. O_o reading the Reptile Rooms forum is scary sometimes. It makes me really wonder why about people.

Yeah...well...Have you read my journal? My beloved snake had liver cancer and I even tried chemotherapy to save her...She was just such a part of my family that I owed it to her to give her the same treatment I would give a human. I miss her...

Not latel. I've been bad about keeping up, sadly. There is just too much serious drama in my own life. O_O I'm so bad. But I was in the hospital, then my uncle was murdered, then my grandmother died.

Oiy...I don't blame you. I'm very sorry Didn't mean to open up a can of worms, just wanted to say that I put my snake through chemo, so hopefully I can get my gecko the appropriate care if she gets impacted.

Nope, not a can of worms at all. My Grandmother's memorial service was yesterday. So it was on my mind.

Making the photograph a little higher on the shutter would have had a really nice effect, making it look more mysterious, devious, and just so much cooler!

Still nice though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to docszoo223 [2007-08-14 14:18:32 +0000 UTC]

You mean to make the shadows darker? That really wasn't my intention, but would you like me to develop it differently for you? I would be happy to put another version in scraps!

And I am assuming by "higher" you mean faster, but if you mean a slower shutter let me know. She was moving around so much I needed a fairly fast shutter speed to catch her before she moved...she's not one to sit there all pretty like Zot!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

docszoo223 In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-14 21:02:53 +0000 UTC]

Higher as is in faster. . . sorry bout that

It would be pretty cool to see an "evil" version of the photograph, and lots of people would enjoy it too

She's a cutie though! How old? Didn't you say you were going to breed them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to docszoo223 [2007-08-15 03:06:38 +0000 UTC]

Heh, this was already underexposed two stops, any more and I would have lost detail in the lighted areas. I think what you are looking for may be more contrast and that can be done during the "developing" of the photo.

I do get what you mean though. I may mess around with it an put another version in scraps.

Try leaving the camera on top of her terrarium or beside it. Every time you come into the room pick the up put it to you eye and than set it down somewhere else

Omg you're gonna breed crested geckos? That is crazy awsome! I started with a collection of two but then I bought more and more ^^ I pratically became obsessed XD Now I ended up with 15 lol and getting more--- The babies they're producing now are incredible! I actually had a pinstripe breed with a fire pattern gecko and what came out was an olive colored crestie with a flame pattern and white spots--- We had a breeder offer us 400$ for her but we kept her XD

Btw ur female looks alot like my male XD almost the exact coloration

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherTelesca In reply to AuroratheHedgehog [2007-08-14 15:58:36 +0000 UTC]

I honestly know nothing of color morphs or anything... The male I picked out for her is light in color, but mostly because I want to name him Latte!

When I get a new reptile now I always try to get a pair--I kind of look at it as an investment. The money I will make from selling the babies will go into a vet fund, so when one of them gets sick I don't have to worry about the costs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AuroratheHedgehog In reply to HeatherTelesca [2007-08-14 16:10:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I started out like that as well. But then I began to research color morphs and began looking for the more extravagant color breeds. I believe I uploaded one of my cresties pictures, my white dalmation. It's such a shame that she was being abused- At least she's happy now.

You'd be surprised at the morphs even the most plain geckos can create for example, I mixed my yellow crestie Milo with my red one Stubbie and I got a pinstripe harlequin, and once you start getting those, it easily pays for vet bills, food, supplies etc... ^^

Good luck

HeatherTelesca In reply to AuroratheHedgehog [2007-08-15 02:58:14 +0000 UTC]

....What the hell is a pinstripe harlequin????

Well I've heard they are fairly easy to breed, so it is my hope that they will help keep the vet costs down!
