Oh God... This is like 7 years out of date. I think the game was in beta still at this point. But it was the Java PC version. I think it was shortly after they added silk touch to enchanting. I did it by bringing ice to the nether, which then melted and became a water source block. Pretty sure they patched it out of the game a LONG time ago.

Just FYI, they fixed if so you can't do that anymore, the ice in the Nether trick.

Well in creative you can just place it, but in surival use can use a shovel with the "silk touch" enchantment in order to get a grass block to bring to the nether.
