This is 's character Sailor Irida of the asteroid Iris.

The people of Iris traditionally release lanterns in the sky to represents their departed. I don't have the details of the tradition Iris created but I think it's to guide the soul of the dead to wherever they have to go. (similar to some real life traditions I've heard of lately)

The mythological Iris was sometimes considered as a psychopomps (psychopompos in greek) which is a guide to the soul to the after life (the underworld in this case).

I tried to put some allusion to the rainbow in her dress and jewelry. She's got a rainbow sash around a waist. I put several teardrop shaped pear on her outfit and in her jewelry to symbolize rain and gave her à sun shaped headdress because Sun + Rain = Rainbow.

On the picture itself, coloring the hair was a torture but the results were worth it. Overall, I'm very happy with it.
