As a kid, my dad used to read Russian fairy tales to me, and I particularly loved the tales of Baba Yaga. Baba Yaga's house was rumoured to walk about on chickens' legs as she hunted down wayward children in the forest to eat.
These sorts of fairytales were designed to instill order and some basic rules for survival - such as not going into the woods at night (or baba yaga will get you!)

As an adult, learning about how women were persecuted as witches in Europe made me think about how common this is in myths and legends around the world.

This piece is the first in a series, exploring myths and legends from different cultures, and showing the strength of unconventional women who were seen as outcasts, pariahs or even monsters.

Oh, and this is also my very first oil painting since early high school! I recently picked up a set after seeing some fantastic oil paintings in person, and I'm in love with using them to paint already!
