I'm curious as to how so many people could view your pictures without stoping to comment on how lovely your artwork is. "Scholar" in particular makes me rethink the capabilities of watercolor. Everything has a softeness to it yet a well defined shape.

If I may ask how did you create the line work of "Scholar?"

Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words : )

This work started with a sketch of the character, here's a link to the original sketch:  orig12.deviantart.net/f…
I then printed copies of it and started working on the background and when I was satisfied with the composition I traced the line work onto the watercolour paper with a hard pencil (so that the pencil wouldn't show in the finished piece) I usually also paint over the line work with watercolours so that it feels like I've only used watercolours for the entire illustration. : ) Hopefully this answered your question!

Your welcome and sorry for the late reply!

The link doesn't work for me, but your explanation gives me a good idea of how your process works. Painting over the line work is clever.   It makes it blend, right?
When you work on the composition of the background do you work only with pencils with the colors already in mind or do experiment with colors during your composition sketch? I'm just learning how to use colors in my work so the choices are sometimes overwhelming.

I usually have an idea of the colour scheme I want to use while I sketch. In this piece I wanted the main colour to be brown but as I started to colour the piece I decided to also add some purple tones to the shadows so that the light coming from the window would seem warmer and the inside of the attic a bit colder. My best advice to you is to use limited scheme of colours, you should try picking two main colours for a piece and then use darker and lighter shades of those colours : )

Using only two main colors sounds so limiting compared to the way I'm used to thinking, but it works so well for you that's hard to argue with that! It should keep me from getting ahead of myself too.  Thank you for your helpful advice.

Such beautiful details and colors But she'd better sit down, you imagined such a mysterious book for her, her legs will hurt if she reads it all while standing up !
