Description No. trois! Now you can see my few attempts at Valjean and Fantine. These are the most recent, as I did them like... a week ago? Right after seeing Les Mis in Atlanta. I was so excited I nearly exploded with joy.

Will I ever go past drawing just heads and shoulders? Stay tuned to find out!

Les Miserables is (c) Victor Hugo and whoever wrote the play.

Heads and shoulders are good to practice. They're pretty key features. I like your style. It's disney-esque.

I love all your sketches! Your style is so familiar even though I've never seen your drawings - it reminds me of disney but with a lot more passion.

Really I'm in love with your work! I'm in Les Miserables right now, playing Eponine. And I just have to tell you that the facial expressions that you captured in these sketches for her are simply fantastic!!!! I really feel that all those faces tell her story Thanks so much for the inspiration

Oh my goodness, it's Fantine!

I mean, I love how you portray the other characters as well, but Fantine has always been my favourite. ^^

Okay, as I said before, your work is just charming! To echo a previous commenter, your 'handle' on expressions is amazing - you really capture the personalities of each individual character! Javert of course, is awesome. And I particularly love the little headshot of Fantine up there. Very pretty (in a melancholy kind of way haha).

Thank you! Expressions are easily my most favorite thing to draw. Fantine gives me difficulties now and then; but I would like to draw her more often, "I Dreamed a Dream" is in my opinion one of the most poignant pieces.

Oh it really is. The lyrics are just so beautiful and heartbreaking - poor Fantine!

May I marry your character design and expression-drawing skills plz? Seriously, your handle on faces, on differentiation of features and body types and making them fit with personality is amazing.

You could, but what would you name your children? Thank you! Different body types and features are something I've been working on particularly lately.

If there was ever a scene to be animated in Les Mis, it'd have to be between these two.

More Valjean, plz! And lots more Javert too, I really love your design of him.

LOL, I'm rather amused by your struggles with Marius too, haha. He's a tricky one! I don't think I've ever tried to draw him. Keep up with it though, youll nail him the same way you got some of the other characters so well

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelenaSun In reply to DetectiveMel [2008-11-05 02:30:23 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks. I'd love to do a full scene between Javert and Valjean. Maybe like "The Confrontation".

I don't know what his deal is! I keep listening to Empty Chairs and Empty Tables hoping to get inspired. Thanks for your encouragement!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DetectiveMel In reply to HelenaSun [2008-11-05 17:32:42 +0000 UTC]

I think Marius' deal is that he's a difficult character just to get in general. He's probably the most human in terms of psychological realism of any of the characters in the book and most people don't quite know what to make of him, it's kind of hard to form an opinion either way about the guy (or perhaps that's just me!) And so it should follow that it's harder to get a visual design down when you don't quite know the character.

I could simply be putting too much thought into this of course

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelenaSun In reply to DetectiveMel [2008-11-06 16:33:20 +0000 UTC]

It's just that he's so normal... A naive young fellow caught up in the ideals and revolutions of his time, meaning well and falling in love and just... Everyone else has such strong personalities it leaves Marius behind sometimes I think. He's an average kind of guy; how do you draw an average guy while still making him so you don't think "Background character" and think "Oh yeah, Marius" ?

Nonsense. Thinking about this kind of thing is fun.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DetectiveMel In reply to HelenaSun [2008-11-07 15:55:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, exactly! Now my advice is just to capture that thought process in your sketches I think once you have a better idea in your mind about the character it should be a lot easier to visualise him. He is just a man amongst giants, and yet he is intregal to the story, so there must be something about him that puts him above being merely a background character. Personally I think it's that he is more complex than the other characters. Though they do have striking personalities, most of the major characters are quite flat and predictable (not in a bad way, but, they are) yet Marius is more rounded, and realistically flawed. He could be somebody you know, whereas you're never going to meet a Valjean, for example - he's a thing of fiction.
I don't know if this helps at all, I'm just waffling now Good luck with it, though!

HelenaSun In reply to DetectiveMel [2008-11-07 21:25:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! That's a big help. I agree a lot though; Marius strikes me as the guy that I could meet any day on the sidewalk.

It'd be cool to meet a Valjean though...
