Description ~ Fortunate ~

How fortunate we are, I thought to myself as you lay beside me, sleep threatening to overwhelm us again. We had just spent the day doing nothing and everything at once.

(from Groggy Morning )
______________________________________________________________________________________
A portrait of 's Kuzma and Katya from her series Blue Star  - I gave her the piece personally when we met in Barcelona this weekend for a most exciting city break dotted with artistic exchanges and conversations!

Kuzma Mayakov is a both idealist and cynical writer, the protagonist of charcoalfeather's ongoing series Blue Star set in 1930s Russia. Kuzma is the youngest son of a family going through a crisis after the Russian Civil War, and Katya is the woman he loves but with whom he has a complicated relationship due to her past ties with his family.

You have such a beautiful way of drawing hair! I love the way Katya's flows out across the grass and tumbles over Kuzma's shoulder. The pose is technically complex but you've executed it almost effortlessly.
I love their expressions of contentment and how at ease they are in each other's company. I also like that, despite the intimacy of their pose, they are both staring out into the distance dreaming of their future- together or apart though?
This image is so full of possibilities. A lovely gift!

Thank you so much for the comment and interpretation! I'm glad you noticed their glance and how it may also suggest that there are things that separate them. At first I considered doing a more amorous pose for them where they looked at one another embraced, but then I went for this in order to suggest the idea that their story is not a simple and straightforward romance.

This is so beautiful! I just love the angle and their poses - they must have been hard to draw, but they came out perfectly! I love the sleepy, warm mood around them and they look so comfortable with each other! A lovely gift! <3

Thank you! I'm happy with how the pose turned out as well, it was interesting to draw an image that can be rotated with the other side up and still make sense.

AHHHH! Thank you so much for posting this and once again, giving it to me in real life! That was so fun and remember I was so shocked that I thought this was somehow a crossover of Merwyn and Kuzma before I had properly looked at it? Interestingly enough, you've rotated the picture on dA that is the opposite of how I usually look at it in real life (with Katya closer to the audience, at the bottom). Interesting how different a piece can see when looked at different angles! I suppose you've put Kuzma closer to the audience since the quote and the title is taken from the story which is told from his point of view?

I love how they look so calm around each other and how the grass is cushioning them. And her hair is so lovely--no wonder he's captivated by it as he was in the short story! Her dress is wonderful--I think I will draw her wearing that in a deviation coming up soon. She looks slightly curious as to what he's thinking and Kuzma seems to be staring at the sky, pondering about the time he's spending with Katya right now and trying to find the right words to capture this particular situation/feeling.

You've summarized the story quite well (though it's actually early 1930s Russia for the most part in the current timeline, and the 1920s stuff is in the flashbacks)! Yes, complicated relationship to say the least...

Now I wonder what you'll be doing with the pictures of Aidan I gave you--both the one of him as a nobleman and the other as a monk based on what we saw at the art gallery and what you'll be doing with the blank piece of paper I gave you too!

You're very welcome, it was awesome to be able to give it to you when we met!!! Haha I know, it was really funny when you said that They actually would be a nice crossover xD

Really? Indeed, I made him the focus since he's the protagonist (but while drawing I kept rotating it, so any side would work). But Katya does seem to look at the viewer more directly while Kuzma looks "through" the viewer in a more dreamy manner. That's right, I changed the description xD

Ah yeah, the one with him as a monk will look very interesting since our styles will be very merged there, much more than in the other collab Haha that's right, I have an idea as to what to do with that one (when I asked you for the paper I actually wanted to draw Aidan as a monk like in those religious drawings in the Art Museum but then I saw another art piece at Palau Güell that inspired me so I guess I'll do that instead ^^)

It definitely would. Do you think Merwyn would like Kuzma more than she does like Halvor canonically? Since we've concluded that her love for Halvor was more about the idea of him than the actual man, for Kuzma, how would it work? Would it still be the same since Merwyn seems to be the type to be obsessed with an idea rather than reality? Now it's time for an AU where instead of meeting a Viking from Denmark, she meets a Varangian from Rus' who is supposed to be an AU version of Kuzma? He would be a more scholarly type, maybe somewhat like a court official rather than a strict warrior

You're right. Typical of Kuzma, he would be looking at the audience or "through" them in a dreamy manner. Wonder what he's thinking about...space? His father? The future? His job?

Yes, I can't wait to see all of that Now that you've mentioned Palau Guell, I'm even more excited to see what you'll come up with!

Hmm I think she would, as long as he's a warrior as well - she does want someone heroic, so of course the medieval version of Kuzma should have some warrior features as well if she were to fall in love with him (but not as adventurous as Halvor since he would be away too long and would put her on the second place). So yes, the AU with the Varangian sounds awesome!! If Merwyn were with someone she loved and who loved her back, she would change in the sense that she would be more down to earth (because she wouldn't feel that urge to escape anymore), so I suppose she could get along with someone like Kuzma (or his Varangian version xD)

Perhaps he's thinking of how Katya would fit in his world and if he's ready to become so involved as to share all his doubts and his inspiration with her and if he's willing to take the risk to get hurt.

He still would be more scholar than he is warrior, a bit like Aidan, I suppose. Do you think she'd go with him to Kievan Rus or would she prefer him to stay in England?

That's very true--a good guess. And he might wonder what kind of person he's been turning into since getting to know her better.

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2017-05-12 22:05:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that would work. She would go to Kievan Rus, she'd love to see another country and she wouldn't mind leaving England since there's not much to keep her there (she doesn't get along with her parents either, let alone the Earldorman's family).

Yes, that too. Would he say that he's changed for the better since he's known her?

Hmmm...not particularly. I think he just sees the world differently, not necessarily worse or better. Possibly more mature in a positive sense though, with a wider understanding of different personality types and concerns.

Btw random question: if the Mayakov brothers lived in our time, how would they look differently? What dressing style and hair/ beard would they have?

Hmmm...very good question! I'm tempted to do a couple of sketches to illustrate this.

I think Kuzma would be rather polite in his fashion sense and maybe slightly hipster (like skinny jeans and such, but not too extreme) when he's not overly polite (like going to a concert or something, or casual friends meeting). Mitya would be more casual and I think a little messier, and not be as careful about his hair which is often more messy? He might go for a lot of tshirts with odd sayings or logos while Kuzma tends to wear clothes with no patterns.nAnd Yura is the most casual I think, and "simplistic" since he's the least likely to care about clothes. He might even have some mud stains on his clothes from the outdoor stuff he does.

How about your characters? It'd be interesting to see how they compare to mine!

Hah that's so cool to think about Hipster Kuzma And Mitya with those t-shirts and Yura's mud stains And would they have the same hairstyle as in canon? And would they have beard? What about Katya and Liza, how would they look like? Or Chinghiz and Sam? And would any of your characters have tattoos or piercings?

Haha I'm tempted to make all of my characters metalheads, but I'll try not to Helgi would be the messiest and most casual, with torn jeans and t-shirts, Lars would be punk-ish, Aidan would be a bit on the hipster side but wearing a lot of black, I imagine Hakon wearing camo pants and army boots in his free time but he could also wear a suit if his job required it. Yngvar would be wearing something more formal but not as impersonal as a suit, but rather something like a long coat, vest and shirt, all black. Aedgar would wear a suit (or a uniform if his job required it - since I imagine he'd be in law enforcement somehow) and Merwyn would be wearing dresses and would look very feminine. As for Rannveig, she would perhaps wear t-shirt, short skirts/pants and boots but she could also pull off an elegant evening dress and heels if the occasion required it.

I think their hairstyles would be pretty similar only Mitya might be different? What if he had the sides of his head shaved but the top still was pretty long? That hairstyle is becoming pretty popular now. I think Mitya is the most likely to have a "non-traditional" hairstyle. I think Sam might want to get a tattoo although (probably because) his parents will kill him for it. But yeah, I don't think anyone else would. Definitely not the older characters (probably not even Ardalion).

LOL, if you made them all metalheads...well you sort of did that with the series of drawings you did a while ago already That does make sense. Rannveig is much more "tomboy" in a way than Merwyn, so it makes sense she'd usually wear something more casual and less traditionally feminine. She's much more active than Merwyn too--I'd imagine her as the type to go mountain climbing and on road trips quite often, while Merwyn's more of a homebody.

Yeah, Yngvar doesn't seem like the type to rock a suit most of the time. Trenchcoats fit him the most. Would Aidan be slightly goth, do you think, with the amount of black he wears?

Haha Sam with long hair and tattoos, that would be so fun to see I love the idea about Mitya with that harstyle! What about Katya and Liza?

That's right! I have to finish that "metal band" series though, almost forgot about it. Hmm yeah, I think Aidan would be goth, but nothing too extreme... I really have to draw them in our times, at least Aidan.

Sam would go totally 70s Hippie

I think Katya and Liza wouldn't have piercings (maybe, marginally, Liza could have one). Katya would be casual and occasionally feminine, while Liza would be casual most of the time though she likes "cute casual."
