Our cat never goes out either - but that is more our choice than hers. For one, she has been de-clawed. For another, there are more ticks and fleas per acre in southern Illinois than anywhere else on the planet - or it seems so, anyway.
Tell ya what works, though.. play toys. She spends hours every day, tossing, chasing and pretty much killing to death a multitude of items that litter our floors. Everything from stuffed mice to tinfoil balls to, of all things, [plastic] ring tabs from the tops of glass milk bottles. Keeps her fit.
Sleeping, I'm afraid, is something that all cats do. Our cat, Gnatalie, is sometimes so tired from sleeping all day, that she has to turn in early at night. Of course, since it is our job to warm the bed for her, she always comes into the Living Room to announce that it is indeed time for bed.
I often say to Donna, "I wonder just what the hell we did for entertainment, before we got this silly animal."

haha, that is sooo true! Our cats tell us when it's time for bed as well - and they are more persistent than my mum when I was 6 years old!
She has some toys, but she's not that interested in them any more. She's nearly 17, they loose their playfulness with age. Well, unless it's spaghetti. For some reason she LOVES spaghetti and will happily follow a well cooked, dangling spaghetti for hours all around the house (...now THERE'S an idea; boyfriend is slightly chubby as well... ouch, I haven't said that, don't tell him!!!!! He needs to be like that, he's keeping me warm! Where else would I put my cold feet at night?! )
Uh, de-clawing cats really gives me the shiver... That is something no vet in Europe would do, as it's completely illegal here and considered bodily harm. Yes, she wouldn't be able to defend herself or climb a tree in a case of danger, so she is probably saver at home.
Ah yeah, ticks are so disgusting!! What purpose do they have anyway?!! Apart from being creepy and utterly disgusting??? Especially when fully fed!! For some reason they seem to like me much more than the cats, call me tick-magnet.... When I was a child, I used to bring more home than the cats. To a point, that my doc suggested I'll get vaccinated agains rabies, just in case (didn't work - I seem to have rabies for the last 30 years *evil grin*).
I tell you what we found out though, after years of hardcore-outdoor barbecue nights with friends: If you just had enough beer, they are not interested any more!

Okay.. you originally left out the whole 17 year old thing. When I'm that old, I plan to lie around and do as much nothing as possible as well. Already got the fat part down.
I could tell you about cold feet - let's just say I'm kinda happy the old girl hit menopause.
No kidding - illegal to de-claw cats? Never heard that. We had Gnatalie's done when she was really young, when we had her neutered. It didn't really seem to bother her. She was at the Vet's for two days and, when we brought her home, other than licking the stitches a little, you wouldn't know she had had it done. She ran around and played like she had prior to the surgery and didn't give any indication that she was in any discomfort. Don't get me wrong; she hates the Vet's. But the reason, we suspect, is because she remembers the shots she got there. Those she did NOT like.
Anyway.. her being a house only cat, having her de-clawed makes sense. Saves a lot of wear and tear on the furniture - not to mention our arms. She really is a brawler sometimes and if she had claws, we'd be running around constantly looking like we'd been pruning rose bushes without protection.
You ever get out this way, we can do some barbecuing.. one of our favorite pastimes. In the cooler months, we even have a fire pit we can use.. double duty. And, of course, lots of good dark beer.

She sure looks happy, but I suspect she would strongly disagree about losing any weight!

Well it's great that you saved her than, I had a dog that was similar. She loved people she knew, and was very wary around strangers. She would go outside and was always happy to be out, but very cautious around people she did not know. And if she saw a steel bar of any kind she would really freak out. We figured that she was abused in the 6 months of her life prior to being adopted by us.
