Description

Name: Drogo Blackwood
Age: 460
Gender: Male
House Affiliation: Ravenclaw (Head of House)
Classes: Defense Against the Dark Arts, Ghoul Studies

Blood Status: Pure, but a vampire now
Physical Description:
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 154
Hair: Blue-black
Eyes: Red
Drogo has wax-white skin and slightly sunken eyes with dark circles under them, his hair is blue-black. During his daytime classes he keeps his entire body wrapped up in heavy dark robes, exposing only his eyes and occasionally hands. In the night he wears considerably less, dressing more ‘normally’. Because of this he’s actually creepier looking in the daytime.

Personality: Prof. Blackwood is generally calm and quiet, not easily angered even in situations that should be embarrassing to him. He likes to see everything organized and clean, sometimes grading students down just for poor handwriting. To Drogo the nature of his subject is incredibly important and even if a student doesn’t get a good grade or can’t complete the class he is happy to tutor them privately, not wanting anyone to go out into the world unprepared for danger.

In general he takes a neutral stance on things, even if an action may be considered evil or selfish as long as it doesn’t bring harm to anyone but one’s self he isn’t likely to punish for it. Inter-house bickering and rivalries do irritate him slightly and he finds it incredibly distasteful to judge someone based on their blood, house, fashion, or even species. Oddly enough he doesn’t believe that there is such a thing as ‘dark arts’; to him nearly all magic can be used for good or evil; it’s the user and use which determines that, not the spell itself. Magic is like a knife to him, it can be used to carve, cook, create, or even save lives, but in the wrong hands it can also be used to harm them as well.

People (especially members of the staff) acting immature or causing problems because of fooling around gets under his skin and he is likely to detract points if he catches people being jerks to each other and making messes. However if he catches someone dabbling in dark arts he’s more likely to keep it a secret and try to help them through whatever is troubling them or causing them to turn that way, not wanting anyone’s entire life to be wrecked by a youthful mistake or naiveté.

History: Drogo Blackwood was born in 1588 to a pureblood family. At that time the purebloods had not all become inbred and were still thriving and well off. Their family actually had relatively good relations with the muggles of the area, openly helping them and living amongst them. This ended when his father was accidently killed in 1589 after being caught up in one of the many battles going on at the time in France. Following that his mother took him to a small all-wizard town in Eastern Europe.

He continued to live there until 1607, at which point he left his mother and new younger siblings alone and went to work hunting magic creatures for potion ingredients. In 1624 he began working for a group aiming to capture the eggs and horns of Romanian Longhorns and amassed quite a bit of wealth doing so. In 1627 he was overtaken by greed and allowed the other members of his group to be killed by the creatures, taking the treasure, eggs, and horns all for himself. Unfortunately he was unable to find his way home and became lost in the Carpatian Mountians. By the time he resurfaced in the wizarding world in about 1650 he was already a vampire. Meanwhile his siblings had grown up and continued the family.

In his early years as a vampire Drogo was rather vile towards humans and often toyed with them before killing them, never leaving a victim alive. He prayed almost exclusively on muggles as well, preferring their defenselessness to the real danger of attacking wizards. This continued until about the 1770s, at which point he started to mature past vampiric youth, cutting back quite a bit on the number he killed and often leaving a victim with enough blood to recover completely. In the 1790s he visited his family in Eastern Europe and then again in France, finding the Eastern European branch had stayed pureblood, while the French had begun welcoming half-bloods into the family.

By the early 1800s he’d started to forge new friendships and become a useful member of society again, though by 1885 he had moved away from his home in France to join a friend in England. There he lived in London until 1888, finally moving to Scotland where he has lived since.

The late 90s are the last time he admits to having killed anyone; from that point on he took to feeding only from willing blood donations.

In 2018 his friend, the former DADA professor, sent him a letter asking if he was interested in the job, and giving him a recommendation for it. Once that one left Drogo took the position and has taught it ever since. Most of the current staff was at one point his students; Drogo occasionally still treats them as such, having the most respect for the older staff.

Other: Over the years he never stopped practicing magic, and with quite a lot of time on his hands and a good deal of dedication Drogo became excellent at both wandless and non-verbal spell casting. While his main job is to teach DADA and Ghoul Studies he CAN be convinced to tutor students on the subjects.

Neither branch of his family has been pure blooded for over a hundred years; those descendants of his alive during the Wizarding Wars sided against the Death Eaters.

Weaknesses include fire, light, sunlight especially, he is 'allergic' to garlic and dislikes the smell of it among a few other herbs that he will not disclose to anyone but very trusted friends.

Sorry if something here doesnt jive with your concept of Harry Potter vampires but I researched all I could about them everywhere and filled in the 'blanks' with classic vampire myth.

A Muggle-born female student would be the most likely to ask this, having read Twilight. Then she'd explain where she got the idea.

Ever since the 1970's(Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire books), vampires have been seen as the ultimate dreamy bad boys for teenage girls.

The Prisoner of Azkaban game even has a famous vampire card titled Amarillo Lestoat: harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Ama… . I now realize this was written to make fun of Anne Rice books. At the time, Twilight wasn't published yet so they couldn't make fun of it.

Yeah, there aren't enough vampires that are just grumpy old men who got all of that out of their system 100 years ago.

Yeah. It seems that most are bitten young. But if girls are attracted to that, who am I to judge? And he'll probably report any girls that ask to be bitten to the Headmaster. Student/Teacher relationships are NOT okay, even if the legal age of consent is 16 in the UK!

They sure are in the romance books, maybe the older vampires just cant get any or arent interested so they dont make it into the stories!

Good. And I've kept arguing with a friend of mine that kept saying that a vampire professor would be too dangerous for Hogwarts. More so than a werewolf professor, apparently.

Hmm, seems like a vampire thats in control of themselves all the time would be better than a werewolf that was only in control some times...besides, there are vampire candies and things so clearly vampires do get to hang out with wizards

They are Beings after all, which means they "have sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part in shaping those laws." However, since Drogo is 460 years old, and the definition of "Being" was finalized until 1811, Drogo would remember the days when vampires were hunted(probably by both Muggles and Wizards). I'm wondering if they use wands and potions and charms like wizards and witches?

During the 90s he killed people on both sides, though not a huge number. Basically those who got too close to him or tried too aggressively to make him take a side were made into meals. He doesnt regret those so much as he regrets the people he killed in his younger days, or even as a human.

Like those Cullen people in America. Vampires aren't very good with definitions. "We consider ourselves vegetarians, cause we only drink the blood of animals". XD

Still, it's nice to see an actual vampire character in the Potter universe. We only saw a small glimpse of one in the 6th book.

Helix-Wing In reply to IronBloodAika [2010-12-09 23:40:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, in my mind the lich thing was older/came first and the horcruxes were like 'inspired' by it in a way

IronBloodAika In reply to Helix-Wing [2010-12-09 23:47:26 +0000 UTC]

Or perhaps someone's attempt to make a more 'stable' version. Instead of severing their soul into parts for both the body and the vessels, the user would transplant their entire soul into a vessel. However, the body would not retain it's life for long, since without a soul inside it it is technically dead. However, the soul is still tethered to the body and is able to control the remains (at this point bones). If the vessel is destroyed the user would still be able to pass onto the next world without trouble.

I sort of imagined that this one wizard wanted to learn all he had yet to be discovered in the magical world. However, he didn't want to mutilate his soul with a Horcrux or become reliant on a stone that could be stolen. So he instead created the process for becoming a lich. And since his body is technically dead, he can never tire or need to eat or drink. Since he was all about accumulating knowledge and not his appearance, he didn't mind the fact that he's just a walking skeleton. Also on the plus side, he's basically immune to all the Unforgivable Curses.

Helix-Wing In reply to IronBloodAika [2010-12-10 00:10:01 +0000 UTC]

Actually in the HP verse without the soul the body continues to live in a vegetative state.

In my thinking it was similar (with the tether and such, the connection) and like in fantasy games if the body was destroyed it would reform again, though probably each time it reformed it would be come a bit 'deader'. Though to me a Lich would become more an ethereal ghostly being rather than a physical one, more rooted in magic/energy. Still, to me lich = older
