Well done, man. Reminds me, I need to draw more vehicles.

Thanks.Β  I have plenty of practice drawing vehicles and robots.Β  I really need to work on more human characters.

Don't get bogged down in drawing the human figure, it will take away from your travelling time

Have you picked up that inking book by Gary Martin? It covers all the basics, but has sample pages(folded) for you to ink. I lightboxed the samples onto unfolded bristol, and am using those for practice. Lots of figures and buildings and stuff to ink. The 2nd edition has the samples. If you want that book, a used copy with the samples still intact is your best bet.

Don't worry, if I get bogged down with something, I just leave it until I feel like going back to it.Β  If its not fun, there's no point

I've not seen that book, although I do have plenty of other art books lying around.Β  In the end, I just draw it how I want to.Β  I do borrow a lot of poses from them though.Β  I could do with getting myself a lightbox too.Β  Looks a pretty handy bit of kit.

Yeah man, keep doing it as long as it's fun. Try to find ways to make it fun if it gets boring, that's my motto.

A lightbox (superceded by lightpads) will make your life easier, trust me. A light table is even better for very large drawings, but prohibitively expensive. Good thing you mentioned it, as a fantastic alternative to light tables/boxes presented itself a few years ago. It comes in the form of theΒ  Studio Designs Futura Craft Station(with the clear glass top). You just place the light source of your choice under the glass, and instant light table! I have this table, and it is good for the money, but the glass is fragile, so beware of the weight limit.Β

The next step up to light tables is a large format scanner and large printer setup. Imagine scanning your work and printing to a larger size! This is for those with deep pockets only. I think most artists would love to have those two items at home, if they knew of their existence.

At the moment, I don't have any intentions of getting myself a Lightbox.Β  Just having my pens and pencils lying around is enough to annoy the wife so I don't think she'd be too impressed with the appearance of any such drawing aid.Β  The closest thing I use to a Lightbox is actuallyΒ holding two sheets of paper against the window and tracing the outlines.

I don't often draw on anything bigger than A4 paper for the simple fact that my scanner don't take anything much bigger.Β  I did buy myself a Wacom tablet with intention of drawing on a larger scale, but I've only ever made two practice attempts using it and then never used it again.Β  Its been disconnected for well over a year.

That's the old tried and true method, still works! Yup, the sight of so many art supplies drives many people batty. I try to stay organized, but it's a losing battle.

I draw on 11 x 17 and 11 x 14 sometimes, but to scan them would require a trip to the copy shop. That leaves me with partial scans all the time. I plan to draw 17 x 22 and larger in the future. A4 is my scan limit too. My Wacom is sitting next to my laptop, gathering dust, for months now, but hopefully not for long. Looks like digital coloring and painting is the cleanest and neatest way to go. Airbrush painting is too hazardous, but really fun.

Sounds like we're in the same boat on all accounts there

I've never tried airbrush painting.Β  I think it could get a bit messy and get me in trouble.

If you hate cleaning up after drawing or painting, airbrush is not for you. The wife will divorce you if she sees you doing airbrush Β Working with multiple colors will require cleanup during the entire process, not just the end. Some artists just use the airbrush for certain parts of their illo, because it makes doing certain tasks, like filling in backgrounds, much easier. It's the best tool for painting models and figures though. For illustration purposes, a colored pencil or marker could do the same thing as an airbrush, but they would need to blended or smoothed somehow. Art materials are really fascinating once their possibilities are discovered. I'm like an encyclopedia of art techniques, so ask me if you need anything.

Have you tried Inktense pencils yet? Seems like they're flying off the shelves here in the States. They are my current favorite art tool.

Yes, well that definitely sounds a bit too messy for me.

I've not even heard of Inktense.Β  I might check them out some time, although I don't really colour anything using traditional method.Β  I have got myself some colour pencils that I've been meaning to try out some time.Β  Just haven't got round to it yet.

This has to be one of my fave spaceship designs of all time.
My first association has always been some middle-eastern flatbread cut in half, with something delicious stuffed inside...

Great lines!

I hope you're going to colour this at some point. A space background would look incredible on it.

Cheers.Β  I used a reference pic for the basic shape and layout, but when it came to actually fleshing it out, it was done through memory with a fair bit of improvisation.

Yes, I did enjoy it.Β  Although I do think they might have "borrowed" a little too much from EP4.
