Located 450 km to the southeast of Tunis, Tozeur is the capital of Saharan tourism of the country. It's known for its oases and dunes of sand and one of the most beautiful canyons in North Africa in "Mides".
The history of the city of Tozeur goes back to the prehistoric era with the Caspian civilisation. The fertility of its oases made it one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire. The arrival of the Arabs enriched the architectural heritage of the town. Arabs built mosques next to the churches and developed the urban structure enlarging its souks and outskirts.
Ibn al-Chabât, a 13th century author, describes his city in these words: "Tozeur is the main city of the district of Qastiliya, it is great and noble, it has an honorable mosque and busy souks. It is surrounded by several suburbs. Its palm grove meets its walls. Its gardens produce every kind of vegetable besides sugar cane. "
The handicrafts of the main city of the Jerid is essentially based on the weaving of wool and silk but also on a very important construction material namely clay briks. Those who visit the city of Tozeur will be charmed by the generosity of its inhabitants and the comfort of its hotels. They will find the pleasure of discovering the diversity of its natural and architectural landscapes.
