Description This is something i havent drawn to often, the three first species of dinosaurs that gave name to the word Dinosauria. This is how the scientists of the victorian england belived how dinosaurs looked like. They didnt have much remains to work from, only that they came from giant reptiles. So the logic idea was that dinsoaurs must have looked like giant lizards but active and even warmblooded.

When i was a kid. i didnt like these depictions but now as im getting older, i have come to appreciate retro paleoart even more. And these are very important in our understanding of dinosaurs. These dinosaurs can be found as statues in Londons Chrystal Palace park but im sure most of you know this. Imagine the feeling when the visitors first saw these back in 1854. It was publics first real exposion to dinosaurs. The magic has yet to disappear......

Because they HAD to ultimately be relatives of modern lizards, right? There couldn't be a whole family of animals that don't exist anymore, right?

Actually Owen didn't consider them your run off the mill lizards, but "distinct tribe or sub-order of Saurian Reptiles". While Dinosaur is usually translated as "terrible lizard", Deinos can meanΒ Β  "terrible, potent or fearfully great" and sauros can mean reptile. So basically Owen called the "Great Reptiles". Also if you look at the Crystal Palalce Dinosaurs, their build is actually closer to mammals than lizards.

Oh yeah! I remember seeing these in the Behind-The-Scenes VHS of Walking With Dinosaurs where they talked about how innacurate they were.

They're quite an interesting piece of scientific history.

I also remember thinkin something along the lives of ”people were so dumb” when I read about early depictions of dinosaurs. Then I started studying history and became a bit more tolerant towards old images of dinosaurs. They were fair for their day’s knowledge. And it’s always good to remember that What We know of dinosaurs updates all the time. In 1990’s Jurassic Park dinosaurs were thought to be scientifically accurate, but now they have become outdated as well. Who knows, future (and maybe even some modern age) kids may have exactly the same feeling when THEY watch JP as We did when looking at Victorian images.

Even though we know Dinosaurs didn't look like this it is still fascinatingly fun to see such creatures in the scale our Victorian ancestors imagined these creatures to be.Β  But don't worry such creatures did exist and we call them Mammal-like Reptiles like Estemmenosuchus.Β
