i am still learning and i actually fear using my SLR---because i am inspired by moments...and dont want to mess it up ...with wrong functions...

OK, glad to.
Slow speed is slow shutter speed, when panning I usually use 1/8 or 1/15 or even slower to 1 second. Panning shot is when you follow your subject during exposure. This will result a sharp subject and a blur background.
Panning is use a lot in sport photography specially motor racing.
I love to use it on people on the move to illustrate hectic moments.
I use Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens. It has a stabilization mechanism that make panning works better and smoother.
