Description
This is an illustration for Fantasy Flight Games collectible card game named A Game of Thrones, which is based on the world of best-selling author George R.R. Martinβs A Song of Ice & Fire. This belongs to the Clash of Arms Edition.
This illustration was also used on the card packaging for the "Ancient enemies" chapter pack, which I think is pretty cool!
The character is Areo Hota. He is a tall grizzled veteran with a mop of hair that was once dark but has now turned to a whitish grey. He is now captain of the prince's guard, and wields a tall, wicked looking axe that he has been "wedded" to, and is rumoured to sleep with.
Illustrations for card games like this always have short deadlines, and are supposed to be viewed on a smaller scale than here.

The deadlines varies, but you usually have a couple of weeks, or three. I don't use more than one short evening per card illustration, including this one. It's very rough when looked at up close

The facial structure and emotion reminds me of Philip Seymour Hoffman, but regardless of who it resembles to me, it's amazing. Very well done.

Hehe, yup, you're right. The client changed the release date, so I had to take it down again. I have a pile of other works that will have to wait almost an entire year before I can showcase.

It's scaled down. I always make the card illustrations bigger as they sometimes create books (Call of Cthulhu and A Game of Thrones), and it sucks if they have size restrictions

dude, that thing around his neck, what you call it in english? all the rings that stop swords and stuff, armored vest but oldskool 
but i dont think the bear hair is totaly realistic... sorry. needs more shorter hairs, now theyre to long and to few.
