Description

This is an illustration for Fantasy Flight Games collectible card game named A Game of Thrones, which is based on the world of best-selling author George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire. This belongs to the Five Kings Edition.

The character is Gendry. He is an unacknowledged bastard son of King Robert Baratheon and an armorer’s apprentice.

Illustrations for card games like this always have short deadlines, and are supposed to be viewed on a smaller scale than here.

I like how he's focused on his metalwork instead of looking into the camera striking a pose.

That's definitely how I saw his face, except maybe he looks a bit old here.. he's supposed to be around 15 in the books..

Woah, made me lose my breath for a moment. Not sure why, since I never saw Gendry pictured as a particularly attractive character, but this portrait makes me go a bit ga-ga, gotta tell you. Very nice, makes him look like a young Robert (when he wasn't fat and ugly).

Very nice, very detailed. I think you got this one down, although... Well Renly was supposed to be almost a clone of Robert (in his younger years of course) and Gendry was supposed to be much the same, so much so that when one of the characters who had no idea who was, and had been in the service of Renly, sees him, she almost mistakes him for Renly.

It's always challenging to do a depiction of a character in a beloved novel. I think you've done a pretty good job, though!

Fantastic work as always. I love you how work in so much detail even though it's only going to be a couple of inches on each side.
