Description Hades/Aïdoneus - the god of the underworld and the dead was the man who fell in love with Demeter's young daughter Core/Persephone. And being impatient and doubtlessly feeling starcrossed he didn't lay out some classic courting and smooth talking but simply ran off with Core/Persephone one day when she was out with her friends picking flowers and having a generally good time. Demeter was not taking that shit, so after going into divine strike, refusing to let anything to grow on earth and causing a relentless winter, Zeus had to interfere.

The situation eventually straightened out, with Persephone spending part time in the underworld and part time as a spring goddess living with her mother. But I can imagine that those two never really got around after the event.

Greek mythology also sounds as a tale of Antique Persia in which an angel fell in love with a mortal beauty and who sows, in spring and in every corners of the world with Veronique of Persia, to live with his lady-love up to the end of time...
Ah Perse...phone, would you give me your phone...number ?
And then, follows a german one that has something to do with the "forget me not"...
So Persephone, please, forget me not !

No, she wont! There are several stories like that around the globe hinting at turns of season and putting it in relation to the coming of age of young people. I've read a Chinese one with a similar theme and classics like "Sleeping Beauty" and "Thumbeline" have also similar backgrounds.

I always hated Demeter. Refuses to let go of her daugther, refuses to let her grow up. And when Persephone get taken, she holds the whole world hostage. Sure, everyone is going to die but she doesn't care. She wants her baby back. The fact that Zeus gave in show that he knew how little she cared for the lives she was ending.

If she'd just let Persephone grow up, discover boys, maybe entertain a suitor or two ... nope. Not if she wasn't in control.

I'm with you, Demeter was too over protective of her daughter, had a problem with letting her go. But I don't hate her because of that, it's more like I pity her. She was afraid of her daughter's developement from a kid to a grown up woman with a sexual identity. And I think it might have to do with Demeter's own upbringing, her father Kronos was a monster of a control freak after all. I think that might have coloured her. When the myths tell that he ate them, I'm seeing it as he was stern and cruel and over-regulated their lives, dampening their will and independence. Ate them mentally so to say. And as a result they all reacted differently, from the rebellious Zeus to the introvert Hestia.

Sure. And one of the hardest part of motherhood is letting go. Ideally the mother works diligently towards the day when she's unnecessary to her child. I mean, we don't recognize what a hugelly heroic act motherhood is. My sense of Hera is she had a weak sense of self ... and it's easy to speculate about what made her that way, but the fact is, her child was the one who paid the price.

On the other hand, I do like Hades. In myths he was a somber, dignified gentleman who was only moved to irrational passion by one person. I like to believe he accepted the label of 'rapist' willingly for the sake of his beloved, and that it wasn't rape. That he was pushy, sure, but not ... that if Persephone wasn't verbally consenting she wasn't resisting either. And that he took the risk because he knew her heart better than she did.

Of course, that's only one way to read it. And the alternative readings are obscene. And even this reading is ... I don't know. Offensive. But I see Hades as a man who risked what matter to him most for the sake of the woman he loved.

And I always felt she'd be happier if she started scarfing those seeds the second she saw them.

Hera-of-Stockholm In reply to Artikano [2016-01-18 19:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's an interesting take on Hades. I can imagine him quite somber too, to the point that he scared people. And that he was some kind of a solitaire too, thus he preffered the underworld where he was left alone rather than the constant fuzz up at Olympos. He was not the party animal which I can picture for instance Zeus and most of his direct family with Dionysos in the lead.

Another thing - at the term 'rape'. Now, that's a mistranslation of an ancient Greek word which actually means seduction / cajolement. And thus it has nothing to do with violence, more of a love-game where one part is more 'pushy' than the other and in such a way get their will. So in my opinion Hades never raped Persephone, he seduced her among the flowers and tricked her with him rather than violently carried her away. And I imagine that wasn't really hard. She was probably bored and longed for adventure and also for a bit of a revolt against her over-protective mother and uncaring father. (That's also a reason for Demeter to be over-protective, Zeus didn't pay that much attention to Persephone.) So when flirty Hades turned up Persephone took the chance for a little adventure. Which perhaps became a bit more than she had planned, but that happens in life.

If I'm not mistaken, the original myth made reference to Demeter not letting Persephone receive suitors despite being of age. Which was the 'no dating' of that time. And Pluto meeting her before the events, at a party her mother held ... struck by her beauty, he asked Demeter to court her and was refused. And (again, check your source material) that one of Demeter's nymphs said Pluto, being all rich and dignified would actually make a good match. Persephone might have been struck by ... well, love at first sight, really. Even though she wouldn't have understood what was going on. Very definitely a April/December match up, you know? But gods live forever anyway.

My point is, I think when Persephone cut her thumb and spilled blood on the earth, summoning Pluto, she knew what she was doing. Well. Sort of. She intended to see him again, although like you said, what came next was more than she planned. But not entirely unwelcome. I imagine him suggesting she run away with him and her agreeing, again, without really thinking things through. Following her heart. And all the crap that came after was mostly because 'following your heart' isn't exactly accepted policy.

Yes, something like that. I'm quite sure that they had met before at least on some occasion. But not that often because Hades was not of the socializing kind. Perhaps this first encounter was the first time he saw her as an 'of age' girl, a 'debutante'. And she, insecure, shy - and very very excited. Thrilled and scared at the same time. And a bit of a 'fuck off, mum, I'm old enough to do what I want'.

And that darn Zeus had probably been trying to talk to Demeter about these things earlier, and not being that successful and I guess that was both Demetee's fault because of her relentlessnes and Zeus' fault for perhaps being too blunt about it. After all we all know him and love life.
