Description For s contest The Land Down Under

The singer Orpheus was one of a kind. Move over Elvis, Tome Jones, Robbie Williams and all the rest, his singing could make war stop and animals to come over and listen.

And he had one love in his life, the lovely young girl Eurydice who he spent time with, and most of the time they were happy flower children enjoying the wonders of nature. Until one late summers day when she got bitten by a snake and died almost instantly.

But Orfeus was not going to accept losing his love like that. He ventured to the Land Down Under to appeal to the king of the dead: Hades and his part-time queen Persephone. With his marvellous singing he convinced the royal couple to return his beloved. One one condition - he he should walk in front of her and was not allowed to turn back and look at her during their whole travel back up again.

Poor Orpheus almost succeded - in the last moment before seeing daylight again he "just had to check" and his beloved was dragged down under again.

This story always makes me and recently I saw the Gluck opera of the story and it inspired me to make this picture, and IMO there's hardly any better or darker story connected to the Land Down Under than this. Beats even Dante.

Stock used: Eudydice is from and Orpheus is from

Background is created in Terragen and Aphophysis, post work in Photshop
Inspiration comes from Greek Mythology, the Gluck Opera and FANTASY

BEAUTIFUL picture! It suits the scenery of the story perfect!Though the story was suppose to be dramatic as many things in Greek mythology
One of the reasons Greek mythology became so famous and known from ancient times till now..
We study and learn the reactions of each person, why, when etc.. and they give emphasis on the drama part to make people think, feel and many times to compare with reality..
U truly did a GREAT work on this Hera!

Thanks a lot, my friend yeah, it's indeed fascinating with those old stories, they have stood the test of time and become eternal, just because they are about eternal things, such as love, loss, hate, faith, betrayal, friendship, strife, intrigues and all those other things that defines a man. And what I also like with those stories is that the people are not one-sided, there's no one really good or really bad, everyone have a bit of both sides in them, and are formed by the environment.
I love this O&E story for instance, but also life stories, like the one with Heracles who grows from an egocentric buff to a man with emotions and life-wisdom, who uses his brain as well as his brawns to solve his troubles. A worthy candidate for the gods' assembley.
But I'm certain there were a lot of B-dramas too, who were played once during a theatre festival and then became mercifully forgotten

Thanks a lot, dearest! Yeah, it's a wonderful story! Bittersweet and fodder for inspiration! And I wanted them to look "timeless" and perhaps that became "modern" after all down under there's no time the way we know it.

Yeah, I used to read those stories a lot too. It was actually my uncle who got me into it, he saw that I was reading LOTR like maniac one summer and then he went an got me the works of Homer and told me to read the real things instead. And from then on I was hooked more or less. Since those stories were "endless" you could read them for the pure action or bittersweet romance or you could get behinf and try to understand the deeper meaning with Persephone being kidnapped by Hades and so on.
I also tried to picture the gods, beasts and heroes as well as places, ships and so on. Some things were quite easy, there were picture of ships and castles and so on. But what did Medusa really look like? Or Achilles? Or Artemis? I remember I used to picture Achilles more or less like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian
