Description Polymnia - goddess of hymns

From [link]

POLYHYMNIA (or Polymnia) was one of the nine Mousai, the goddesses of music, song and dance. In Classical times--when the Mousai were assigned specific artistic and literary spheres--Polyhymnia was named Muse of religious hymns. In this guise she portrayed as a woman standing in a pensive or meditative. Her name was derived from the Greek words poly-, "many," and hymnos, "praise" or "hymn."

She was a daughter of Zeus & Mnemosyne.

First of all my Polymnia isn't really standing in a pensive or meditative mood here. I didn't want her to look like she was doing yoga or something. I felt like bringing some action into the picture instead, so I gave Polymnia a drum kid and made her do a hymn to the beat. And soon the other muses will bring their instruments and join in! And then I challenge you to try to sit still!

I sure do love seeing a Classical Muse as a drummer! Especially the muse of religious music - churches lived in the nineteenth century for TOO long, but now usually have "Contemporary" services with guitars and (often) drums too. A long-overdue step forward in religious music!

Needless to say, I will NOT try to sit still.

(Can't resist throwing in a [link] .)

Thanks a lot, yeah I wanted her to be both modern and classic, after all an ancient muse has seen it all and can pick what she feels being the best of it. And I too like it that even churches can embrace more modern music and ways of expression these days.

She is, amazingly, very much both! Immortals have the wonderful option (as do artists ) of mixing-and-matching their times. Clio, Ms. History, is a major supporting character in Piers Anthony's wonderful Xanth novels, and she is quite modern when it's convenient for her to be. I too have a character (Shirley the fairy [link] , age approximately 3200) who sometimes exploits her Bronze Age heritage, but usually prefers to be modern.

(Ms. History? I never thought of Ms. as being an abbreviation for "Muse" - but it could be! And we men who care about women often find that that is exactly what "Ms." means!)

Yes, I can imagine if some immortals whatever they might be (gods, nymphs, spirits) walks the earth they'd lived so long and seen so much that they might end up jaded. Both proud and humble. Perhaps a die-hard war god learns the concept of peace in the trenches of WWI europe? Perhaps a god of medicine can admire mortals who transplant hearts and can go home and ponder the idea of cloning as lost as we are. And a muse, who whisper creativity in our ears, she must be amazed by all those new ways of expressing ourselves, from 3D movies to role plays. And still we tell the same stories as the anciens There's always an Odysseus there travelling the galaxy in his faster-than-light ship or a Romeo and Julia in a Manhattan business district setting.
I like the Ms. idea

I've experimented with immortal characters a few times. Maybe they should get jaded, but somehow they don't. They get wiser, but continue to enjoy life - if anything, they enjoy it even more.

Yeah of course I guess they do that too. They learn how and where to sample the best goodies. Perhaps some of them get jaded and some not. Some might even get more grind down in their old tracks. After all they are different just like we are.

Hera-of-Stockholm In reply to LemnosExplorer [2009-08-01 19:32:39 +0000 UTC]

Depends, the last 3 years we haven't had much of a summer, so there has been a lot of indoors activities, like going to the movies, going to the gym, surfing the net and the likes. Same as in the winter in other words. I'm on holiday now and it's kind of nice outdoors so I've been down at the beach trying to get a shade of a tan and swimming a bit.
