I think cows are one of the most beautiful animals.

Done in watercolour and marker. Texture on top of it from FEEL Resources.

my first animal friend when i was small was a cow, she loved crackers use to come to the fence and lick my hand. i've had a few other cow friends over the years, much more intelligent then people give them credit for. one of my uncles cows figured out how to open gates and would walk to the school everyday at 3pm to meet his children among other things, lovely creature i don't understand how he could have it butchered

Gosh this is so beautiful! ;3; That's so sweet that you will say sorry, too. I want to be a vegetarian one day because its awful how they treat animals in the meat and dairy industries and just everything. They are more expensive, but I always buy the eggs that say cage free.

Thank you ^^

Well if you want to be you should. The first step is deciding you want it. ;D Eep you always have to be careful with using products from animals that are treated "better". Often they improvements are just fancy advertising techniques and it just entrenches the property status of animals (which is why I'm vegan!).

I always wondered that, if cage free really meant what it said. I wish there were easier ways to know exactly where and how your food comes from. I admire you!

Herbivoree In reply to CottonConfection [2011-08-02 16:56:21 +0000 UTC]

Well cage free often means no cage - that doesn't mean the animals get any more space than if they were in cages. Usually they're still in a windowless shed.

There are ways to know exactly where your food comes from - you just have to be ready to come face to face with the answers. I found one website that actually describes how most animals are born, raised, grow, and killed in the typical "farm". Another great resource is the free online documentary Earthlings. It has a lot of compelling information that shows how we use all animals - not just for food but also as pets, for experiments and for leather.

Earthlings.. Ill check that out!

And yeah you're completely right. Another thing I look for is 'free range' on the eggs as well. But like you said we never can really know if they're stretching it or not. There are a few family run or smaller farms out there that still treat their animals humanely.. I just pray Ive bought from one of them when I go shopping.

Ive done lots of research in the past and Ive seen some very sad videos.. I hope one day people learn to treat other living things better.

Herbivoree In reply to CottonConfection [2011-09-19 02:11:30 +0000 UTC]

Well the only way we can learn to treat animals better is by trying the absolute best we can ourselves and hoping we inspire others.

The problem with cage free though is even if they treat the girls amazingly, they actually have to kill all male chickens that are born. There are two different breeds of chickens now after the rise of the factory farm, and to stay in business nearly all family farms use these breeds as well. The layers which lay eggs and the broilers which are killed for meat. Since male layers can't be killed for meat (since they're biologically don't produce much meat) they're killed shortly after birth. According to this book Eating Animals 2 million male chicks are killed a year simply because they're male layers. The ways they kill them are absolutely horrifying. Not trying to preach, just trying to be informative. ^^ I know that really startled me when I learned that.

This is wonderful! I live in an area with a lot of cattle farms.. I drive down country roads sometimes and stop, get out and talk to them.. cows seem so ignored

I don't think I'd be able to do that, I'd feel so sad leaving the cow after! That's very kind that you do though - I'm sure they're often ignored. At least the ones you see on the roadside are actually outside though. c:

Yeah.. I feel so so bad for them! And that's true.. just being in a nice pasture makes them somewhat lucky! It just seems like they are always alone! And very rarely do people call them their favorite animals.. it's so sad. they are such beautiful creatures!

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-06-17 21:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah they are my favourite animal because even though I've never met one they've taught me so much. I became vegetarian the day I read a story about a downed cow and vegan the day I read about where rennet comes from.

Also I say it more often than I should because it's an easy way to tell if you're talking to a vegan or vegetarian. xD Like if I say I want to have a cow sanctuary one day (which I do, it's my greatest aspiration) you know by the look they give you what they eat.

Yepyep. I never seriously considered it until I saw this sanctuary in new york adopting out a bull and then I realized there are probably hundreds of cows that need homes, there just aren't any sanctuaries for them.

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-06 16:23:18 +0000 UTC]

I know whenever you get to open your sanctuary, I will gladly support it! I always wanted to create some sort of rescue for furbearing animals like foxes and minks and rabbits (and all the others too of course!)

Oh! and I am SOOOOOOO excited! I am currently applying to volunteer at a primate sanctuary!!! I really hope they pick me!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-07-07 15:47:50 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to create a rescue for all animals, but I wouldn't be able to do a rescue for carnivores and omnivores personally since it'd be so... backwards to save animals and end up killing more to keep them alive. =/

Eee good luck that'd be really interesting to volunteer there! Where do they get the primates from?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-07 16:32:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... that would be the down side.. it sucks to have a fav animal who is a carnivore.

And they get them from people who had them and pets (aka: stupid people!), and they get ones that used to be on TV and movies and are no longer wanted, things like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-07-08 18:02:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. D: Like I know there is a vegan formula out there for ferrets so perhaps they could formulate one for minks... but it needs work or so I've heard. Although foxes scavenge quite a bit though don't they? As my dog is 100% completely healthy on a vegan diet - wonder if it would be possible for foxes.

Oh that sounds like a really great sanctuary. I always hate seeing primates on television ever since I learned that when they smile they're being aggressive or are afraid so often people had to force them to be afraid so that we think they're smiling. D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-08 20:56:19 +0000 UTC]

That would be amazing! and the dog vegan diet may be possible for a fox. Foxes aren't true carnivores anyway. they do scavenge and they also eat berries and some plants. So technically they are omnivores.

It is a wonderful sanctuary. They are so dedicated to creating the best life for the primates as they can. They aren't like some sanctuaries who allow visitors like a zoo. This place keeps the animals secluded and give them the least amount of human contact as possible so they feel more at home.
Yeah, I learned that too. I hate the thought of people scaring them or mistreating them for our mindless entertainment!

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-07-12 02:17:22 +0000 UTC]

That sounds so awesome. I volunteer at a donkey sanctuary which lets people groom and interact with the calmer donkeys - but it's 100% monitored by people who know donkeys very well and it's treated as a learning experience rather than a way to make money. I can't imagine that would work with primates at all though so that's good that they keep the primates secluded. When do you find out if you get to volunteer there?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-12 16:50:02 +0000 UTC]

Well.. I have to get some shots because the primates can catch human diseases.. after that it will probably be a couple of weeks. That donkey sanctuary sounds great! It's so important to educate people.

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-07-15 19:14:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh that's great. ^^ Yeah the donkey sanctuary is really awesome, it's especially rewarding being able to talk to children about animals and teach them how to respectfully interact with them. Most are surprisingly well behaved lol.

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-15 20:45:29 +0000 UTC]

I haven't been around many but donkeys seem so sweet! It's so important to teach children the right views on animals. I was always taught to love and respect animals and nature as a child. I remember being shocked in kindergarten when one of my friends started talking about how much fun it is to hunt and shoot animals! We were just five! I had no idea people killed animals for the fun of it. I guess it's all about the way you are taught as a child. I still don't understand that perspective.

Donkeys are so gentle. It's really interesting as they are completely different from horses. Donkeys are very accepting until you tell them what to do, and then they'll decide if they want to do it lol. It's such a great learning experience because it helps everyone remember that we aren't the best species or the smartest.

Yeah I won't really ever understand the hunting perspective either. I agree that it has a lot to do with how you were raised. I'm probably one of those millions of people that had a rough childhood so it's easy for me to identify with animals and it's impossible for me to forget that they can experience pain etc. I can't complain though, it made me a much better person.

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-17 00:55:29 +0000 UTC]

I've heard donkeys were a lot more loving than horses but I really didn't know...

Yeah... well this may sound weird... but I kind of understand what you are talking about with identifying with animals because I have a mental illness and when it's acting up, people really tend to treat me like I don't have thoughts or feelings... like I can't think for myself. It reminds me a lot about how some people treat animals.. everything we go through is for a reason to make us better.. it's like gold... it is refined in fire and made more valuable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-07-22 18:23:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah donkeys are very... just there. They're so calm and accepting. Horses basically play role games with you to figure out who is in charge where as donkeys have no hierarchy at all.

Ah sorry to hear that. D: Yeah I find that a lot of people who really dedicate their lives to them have had some eye opening experience or other. You rarely get people who just go oh well it's logical not to use animals and that's that (although I did meet one person like that, they are the most vegan person I've ever met haha if you want to rate it).

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-24 20:39:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I think everyone has to find their own reason to fuel their passion. If not the feelings wouldn't be personal and true. It's kind of like a quote that I really can't remember who said but it's: In the end we will only conserve the animals we care about. Or something like that. That is why I guess it is so important to teach people that animals are all special and important.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-07-28 19:37:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's definitely true. It's funny since people spend so much time trying to figure out 'why' animals are here in relation to humans. Like the number one question I get asked at the donkey sanctuary is why do donkeys exist and it's like um.... just because? lol We wouldn't ask the caretakers at an orphanage why do people exist.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-07-28 20:25:27 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! The fact is that they are here no matter if people find them useful for their own selfish gain or not so people need to just accept that they are sharing this planet with living creatures who are just as important as them. No life is more important than another! At least some people get that point.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbivoree In reply to PhantomFox777 [2011-08-02 17:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah - it's always great to see people who agree. Haha although now that there are so many divisions in veganism and vegetarianism sometimes you'll get people who seem to get that no life in more important than another but you'll have completely different opinions about how to preserve it (like with this vegan I'm having an online 'argument' with on one of the vegan forum homepages lol).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantomFox777 In reply to Herbivoree [2011-08-06 15:22:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... you know, It's kind of strange how humans can't seem to completely unite over anything. Even those who have similar lifestyle choices debate choices and disagree with one another. Of course there are some vegan or vegetarians who just do it to be healthy.
