Description Raffle prize for Β xXDoctorMythXx of his character Rafoe. I'm sorry this took so long! A lot of different thing's got in the way - which combined with the fully painted look I was going for really made this project drag out. I need to learn how to paint properly before I attempt a full paint again - but I hope you like the results regardless of the wait.

Thank you for your patience!

I definitely wouldn't say no to entering your contest with this piece if you're allowing it, as long as you know ownership of the piece is yours regardless . You won it fair and square, but I'm happy to enter your own event in return! Spreads the weath and recognition arounds a little more. I've yet to post this to my old raffle for all the other entrants to see I will when I finish the other winners prize tomorrow. Regardless - I'm really happy you liked it .

Oh yea that would be more in line with what most people do. That's why I was saying "well.. if you're okay with it..." but I agree with that decision, it wouldn't necessarily be fair to other contestants because I had started this early and with another purpose in mind. I will enter if I can find the time around all the other work I have going, I recently started digging into cartography too, loving that and it's pretty popular actually finally making some money from my art.

Herbtr0n In reply to Korwynze [2015-07-21 20:38:11 +0000 UTC]

That's currently something I'm working on too... the best thing to do I find is to put a gradient on your background - 2/3 colours, than work on smoothing it out. Get some good tree brushes/rock brushes and edit them to suit your needs, than you can just kind of throw custom foliage around with a little more ease, fill your foreground and background, and pay attention to your light source. It's always best to determine where your lightsource is before you begin whatever your paintings subject is so that it's a cohesive package. Oh and if you're adding solid terrain, make sure you layer it to create the illusion of distance. It's hard to explain but the first 2 points are probably the most important to starting .

Okay ehm
where do i get good brushes for sai? I cant draw with photoshop

Herbtr0n In reply to Korwynze [2015-07-21 20:48:16 +0000 UTC]

That might limit you a bit, but as long as you are able to paint out gradients the most basic step is done - I would go to google and just look for SAI tree brushes, maybe a tutorial to install them if you're not sure how. Honestly SAI is a really strong software suite so you should be fine, and there is a lot of support for it (a lot on incredibly talented artists prefer it over photoshop for everything BUT finishing touches).Β

But i dont know what gradients are

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbtr0n In reply to Korwynze [2015-07-22 06:27:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh a gradient is a gradual shift in hue, usually there is a tool assigned to your paint bucket tool in whtaever softwear package you're using. Honestly the best way to learn is to ask folks who know what they're doing for advice - keep your eye on key terms, like "Gradients", and google the shit out of them until you know what is going on. The beauty of the internet is your ability to go to youtube and type in "how do I use gradients in paint tool SAI" and you will get a 5 minute video explaining the ins and outs of it. You need the blend the gradient in order to make it look less automated, but thats easy too! ^_^ Just use the infamous SAI watercolour brush (which I wish I had access to!)

for example i take a sand texture and paste it over the picture, so the whole picture has a sand texture?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbtr0n In reply to Korwynze [2015-07-22 17:13:25 +0000 UTC]

Nope that would be texturing. A gradient would be like... well you know how your brush usually has 2 interchangeable colours assigned to it? It's the same as with a paint bucket. For example, you could select a dark blue and a nice bright orange, than use the gradient tool to fuze both colours and make a nice base for a sunset landscape. The blue at the bottom slowly moves into the orange at the top and if you get fancy you can add hues of pink to the orange for that late evening look. Look up gradients .

Just keep at it and you'll get there. You're active in the community, hosting contests and throwing points around, and you're practicing a lot - that's whats important. This was me a year ago:

Manga Portrait:

Landscape:

This is me now (and I haven't progressed much in about 3-4 months because my cousin broke my tablet):

Landscape:

Maps (because it's kind of my new thing):

It doesn't take a long time to improve if you actually commit to it, I need to keep it up - one day I hope to be VERY good, but I'm definitely not there yet. I'm not bad, but I'm not good - I'm just getting to the middle of the road now, in my opinion. Keep up the great work!

Maps are super easy ^_^; the one I showed you was my first attempt. I can only go up from here. My advice is to just draw a blob and than shape it out with an eraser, go from there.

Oh naw, geez I wish I had the capability of streaming, but I probably wouldnt be able to run manga studio or photoshop and streaming software without my computer grinding to a halt... It might take practice, but my advice would be to use a rougher brush with some jagged edges, or to make one like that. Throw some paint onto a white canvas, just a big blurry oblong circle, than randomly carve out the continents shape... I guess it helps that I have my degree in history and have a strong knowledge of actual geography, but a random bumpy shape is all you really need. Just remember that continents are not smooth .

Very awesome! Glad to see your art again! I'm digging the contrast between the yellow and purple bg.

On a side note, a little birdy told me you didnt like splatoon ;w;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Herbtr0n In reply to KawaiiBakaDesign [2015-07-21 04:06:06 +0000 UTC]

THATS NOT ENTIRELY TRUE, YOU SEE, I felt that nobody I knew was interested in playing it ( you probably would have played a few games with me had I asked, but I didn't wanna bug you if you weren't PLAYING IT! ). Splatoon is fun but didn't have much meat to go with the potatoes, I felt like I got everything I could out of the game within 3 sessions (I got to level 13). So I mean, it's good, but its teeny tiny and I figured the money would be better spent on Mario Maker!!

Thank you for commenting on the art though! I had actually been slowly working on this piece for over a month now, and decided that enough was enough, and that I had to get it out! (it's a prize, obviously!) I tried to do it as a full painting, which slowed me down a lot because I don't know any shortcuts, so thats the next thing to learn I guess! Aside from working on back and foregrounds. Thanks for looking! ^_^V
