Description The White Lion… My local pub, with a sign [link] depicting a lion running across a green field… unfortunately the lion looks a little too much like a sheep, so I got it in my head I could do better… the above picture is the result…

“The sign of The White Lion is widespread throughout Great Britain but is very common around East Anglia because of its heraldic reference to both Edward IV and the Earls of March or the Duke of Norfolk. The lion has been a signboard favourite and is generally illustrated in an upright position.” “…At one time many publicans were former employees of an ancient house, either of the church, the state or nobility and often demonstrated their continued association or loyalty to that [ancient house] by including their heraldic shield along with a colour prefix such as The White Lion.”

That was all paraphrased from a great site (well for those of you interested in the history of pub signs it is) found at [link]

……………..

The style and to some extent the composition was heavily influenced by the “sketch” work of Craig Mullins who (if you’ve never seen his work) has to be one of if not the best digital painter out there… See his site at [link]

His sketches, which I prefer can be found at this link on his site… check them out…

Oh and I wish to hell someone would bring back the "Medieval" section so I could stop posting in Misc'... Maybe even a "Medieval & Heraldic" section...

Sheesh...

The chategory system is a disgrace. There are a lot of obscure things which no-one ever uses, and then there is 'people' the only traditional art subchaegory that a drawing of a knight, a pirate a nude or a juggler would fit into.

Or a nude pirate juggler for that matter... but I know what you mean.

Maybe I should try noting a GD or something...?

Glad you liked it and thanks for the comment...

The landlady showed it to the brewery as the pub was due for their three year refurb' and they sort of half liked it... they asked me to make a more colourful version (which you can see part of in my scraps section link), but I haven't heard anything else since...

It would indeed be cool to have my own design hanging outside a fifteenth century pub though...

Thanks,

h.
