Description I shot this photo at the same time as my previous submission.
I liked this one better because it felt more real.
Yet I didn't hesitate to submit the "Back to Basics" because I knew "people" would like it better since it's more mainstream.

The more I think about it the less I like it.
I wonder when did I change and start submitting photography that I think you will like and not what I like?

I will start and change this.
I will stop submitting only the "safe" pictures.
I will be brave and experiment, because that's what this place used to be about for me.

The pose, the attitude are just perfect. We can feel something deep and sad.

Somehow I find the colors a little bit too washed out, it works with the overal mood but I would have ssen something sharper.

i love the colors. this is amazing. I like the bleaching from the light around her and i really like the reds on her lips and cheeks. shes a wonderful model. i like how theres more blues than black and the title really emphasizes that.
incredible picture

First I like her faces and in the way of her look/expression. Of course she is beautifull as the traditional meaning too. Second I have allways beeing here in DA for watching different kind of pictures/art and way of thinking to do one. You are one of those who I have watched for studing your way to think - and thatΒ΄s why IΒ΄m impressed on your description on this photo - keep it going.
This photo exspresses her way of acting on her everydaylife, I suppose. Is she thinking, worrying something or just working with her necktie...who cares, but she looks like beeing just herself. That tallent is one of the most important thing a good photographer (portrait-one) needs - especially with children and with old people. OK - the light and grainy surface, they are elements which are more or less the "opinions" how you deside if you like or not. But that kind of experiments gives valuable experiences...those pastell colours on her gives me kind of gauze/hail feeling...hmmm...in a way she is/might be sensitive, fragile but with great willpower...
So, I like this more than the other, you linked

I actually like this one shot more because it's more surreal, in my opinion.
Nice, bright wash of light. Calm expression.
It makes me happy.
Not happy in the pants, per se.
Well, maybe.

I like the blues and overwelming whites.
so nice how she is looking down.
I like her closed eyelids and facing down.
she is focused but its almost symbolical of reflection or something else than just concentration on the tie...
do you know?

This one has more interesting things going on in it IMO, but at the same time both pictures are great, it's just that they're different. Maybe it's not fair to compare them, just view them for their own merits. Like this one has that light showing through her hair on the right which makes it look a little odd in a way but unique in another.

Always a push pull... submitting what your 'audience' will like... and then deciding not to. It happens to me all the time. About every third photo.

I don't see how this is any more or less mainstream than 'Back To Basics'. I didn't even know there was a mainstream!
The photo turned out nicely. It's cool how you managed to get the backlighting to work without it turning into a silhouette.

such is life,
all long through,
experiment......
risk and chance

or

stay on the sidewalk
don't cross the street
miss the chance
others
........to meet
keep enclosed
hide away
dare not utter
dare not say

no

I do not see this in your style
chance encounter
mix, stir the phial
a life that colured
reflects its charm
a life thats coloured
will do no harm
......................but to those, in lifes grey drab farm!

Charming shot, no risk, but a discovery amongst the possible rejects

i take it this isnt a polaroid?
anyhow, i really do like the tones. they're like semi-cross-processed. the backlight gives the heavenly feel. painful, yet powerful.
im rambling nice job!

hesitation In reply to nain [2006-03-09 22:39:10 +0000 UTC]

no, not a polaroid
and the "semi-cross-processed" is simply a white balance thing

I cannot say if I like the shot or not because there are things I like and things I dislike, so my point of view is quite unbalanced.

First, things I like :
- Her hair and how it floats around her shoulders and chest
- The colour and brightness you put on it.
- I am fan of girls with shirt and tie

Second, what I dislike :
- The expression that is not clear for me : is she supposed to be worried, thinkin, shamed, shy?
- The fact that the angle reminds me a photo id but usually they come by four, maybe if you made 4 photos assembled I would have really like this.

You go girl... I see someone didn't like it because they could not read the expression.... but then from all the other comments, people are taking lots of different emotions from the shot... I hope I always try to please ME when I post shots. This one appealed to me in thumbnail and still appeals but I can't say why... maybe I relate to her grey hair heheh!
