I like how everything here is melded together and can see definite improvement from your older deviations. IS there a story behind this piece? The chimps look like they're grieving, the tortoise looks dead (or hiding in its shell) and the bunny is just under a tree?

Perhaps... watch to much Discovery channel and think that the world continues toward "dark" times... At the same time, there are wonders to be seen, as the baby chimp here discovers.

Like the way the color "snaps" in this...
while still maintaining a late in the day type vibe, and the baby chimp pointing...
great eye by the stock photographer in capturing that, and the rest of this, was trying to work into that and hopefully create the child like sense of wonder.

Think that is one of the keys, choosing stock that works together. Often can speed things along,though on the other hand, the work that has to be done, when that isn't the case... probably takes more skill, but to a viewer, does it matter the effort done, or is just the final result, the only thing of importance.

To the viewer it's just the final result that matters. Sometimes when I sweat over a photo it gets little recognition over a photo that perhaps I throw together. It's the same with writing a song. It tends to be the songs that come easy- that people like the most...maybe because it doesn't seem *forced*....I am not positive what causes that phenomenon...hahahaha. So for me- I try not to sweat, I try to make it easy on myself, when I get to a point of satisfaction I present the photo. It might be a different story if I was getting paid for my photo work. I would pick at it more and try to make them look more seamless/flawless.
What are your feelings on the subject?

My feelings... LOL I don't think I've figured out what people will like or for that matter what people are like.
And the flawless bit, think there is only degrees obtained, always something more could be done, and at least to me, I can get to absorbed in one element / aspect, trying to get it "just right" and overlook the whole. And don't have the patience to let a work age, to the point, where can see it with "other's" eyes...
Do it - to the point of - good enough, then I move on to the next project.

That's me exactly! I just don't have the patience of some people. I can't pick and pick and pick at a picture for days and days, I do quick work with quick turn-around. Hahaha. And hopefully a few of my photos speak to others and are enjoyed.
I think there are more people who work like us on DA, then, perhaps, those who really sit and sweat on one photo.

From personal experience - and considered it a valuable bit of learning so for what it's worth - think can overwork a piece, clean it to the point where all the life goes out of it... Major flaws and problems is one thing... but to nitpick to the ultimate level, can be counterproductive.
