With, and I would say it needs a yellow tint and perhaps some dark shadowy spots to make it look like an old image from a photoalbum or something.. That's just my interpretation.

Like *snoppy said, I think a small gradient to the tree trunk or suggested shading might work. To me, the sky looks a bit empty, but I don't know anything that'll put it in place without murdering the composition.
I love how you devoted the intricate details to the tree in contrast to the simplicity of the human characters shown (though I am pretty sure I have no idea what the whole thing means overall myself).

after seeing both, it seems like the absence of the grandpa make the picture.. kinda empty. color scheme looks good, though maybe more contrast between the picture itself and the background?

grandpa, it looks so boring without him there.
now color wise i think its fine, its warm and has a summer feel to it but if your unsatisified with it i would suggest adding more gradiant to the tree trunk, like add a darker brown to the top to atleast show...shadow? or something. i think a little (NOT HEAVY) shadow effect would make this picture pop some more. but other than that the colors look fine to me, maybe make lil susie's dress brighter? i unno
