The fear of being swallowed up protects them from just walking outside and getting hurt.
When a killer is on the loose....
Fear prevents the possibility of being killed; making them hide.
The dark scared kids because it blinds them. They don't know what it is they can't see.... they don't understand it.
that is why they are afraid.

This is my opinion on nightmares in general. The reason they are so terrifying is because they are your subconscious mind trying to tell you something. It is trying to wake you up to get you to understand something. It was a nightmare that made me make a change for the better in my life.

fear is what drives people to run away from danger and hide it forces them to find the light of hope and wonder that'll save them from danger
it also teaches them on how to over come their fear and become braver
so in a way Pitch is a guardian just not officially

rrrrg... took me a time to realise pitch's full name... yeah, it was when i saw the translation in my language that i realised his full name; pitch black. ... COULD IT HAVE BEEN MORE OBVIOUS????!!!

I made the connection with his name before they even said it in the movie!
as soon as I heard 'Pitch' I somehow automatically connected it with 'pitch black' XD

It's interesting how while Pitch is like an enemy, the world can't live without him since without fear, everything will be thrown in to chaos, because fear, in a way, prevents people from making irrational decisions which sometimes cost more than they should. Problem was (I think) in the movie, Pitch wanted the world to have nothing BUT fear, which is also a really sad thing since that means no hope, no joy. The Guardians, of course, needed to protect that. The movie didn't end with Pitch disappearing (which I have to admit I thought would happen), but instead thrown back in to his own lair, and that still means that fear exists in the world...
But it doesn't mean that we always have to live in fear.
