Khan does not realize that Kirk has been freed, and that he and Spock are attempting to regain control of the Enterprise. From the briefing room, Khan tries to contact his followers in other parts of the ship, "Armory, this is Khan. Report. Rodriguez... Ling... McPherson..." Uhura perks up as Khan fails to make contact with any of his followers over the intercom, "Anyone, report status!" She recognizes that something is wrong. Immediately, anesthesia gas begins to billow out of the air conditioning vent. Khan recognizes the danger at once and rushes out of the room. Uhura also is quick to notice the gas coming out of the vent, along with the young crew woman in the red uniform.
